The following procedure is for performing scheduled daily preventative maintenance on the M‑AERI. All results are recorded on the PM checklist.

Physical check of instrument:

Inspection of external housing:

Observe the current hatch position and record.  Ensure the position is correct for current instrument and weather conditions.  If the hatch is closed and there is no precipitation or ocean spray, clean the blue surface of the rain sensor with water.

Inspection of scene mirror:

When the sky or side hatch is open, quickly look down with an LED flashlight to inspect the scene mirror – do not obstruct the instrument field-of-view for more than ~3 seconds! Note the time of the obstruction. Inspect the path to the scene mirror for obstructions for all view angles in use. Clear any obstructions. Inspect the mirror surface. Clean or replace the mirror if necessary (see instructions).

Inspection of interferometer relative humidity:

Check the interferometer humidity box on the ‘Monitoring’ tab on FTSW, or look at http://webmads.ssec.wisc.edu/, or check the relative humidity (RH) paper indicator on the side of the interferometer. If RH > 20% (yellow box), the desiccant should be changed soon. If RH > 30% (red box), the desiccant should be changed immediately (see instructions).
