Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree required; M.S. preferred, in Computer Science, Engineering or a Physical Science with strong programming skills; background knowledge of environmental satellite data.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Several years experience with UNIX scripting languages (e.g., bash, Perl) and utilities (such as, Makefiles and source code management). Programming knowledge of Fortran and C. Familiarity with data manipulation and visualization software, such as Matlab, IDL, or McIDAS, is desired. The candidate for this position must be able to work creatively and independently with a variety of platforms, people and duties, but must also be willing to work as a member of a team.

Principal duties:

The University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) is a research and development center with an international reputation for developing instrumentation for both terrestrial and space flight applications. SSEC's mission includes the support of faculty and academic staff led research, development, fabrication and implementation of space flight experiments, as well as the development of new meteorological research tools for national and international use.

The candidate will work with several groups in SSEC to develop, maintain, and enhance scripts and data processing software for several satellite-derived winds projects. The candidate will be a key member in the research and development of both real-time and historical processing of satellite-derived winds from data acquisition through product analysis. The candidate will assist and advise scientists and users at SSEC/CIMSS and at national and international locations in support of these programs. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Occasional travel may be required.
