SDI Version 1999nov29 Update Summary

Note: This update summary is a copy of emails sent 03 and 08 December 1999 to SDI sites that purchased MUG support for their systems.

03 December 1999

SSEC Desktop Ingestor (SDI) Administrator,

SSEC McIDAS User Services is pleased to announce that SDI software updates are now available from the MUG Web Site.

The first version, 1999nov29, was added earlier this week. From the MUG Web Site main page ( https://www.ssec.wisc.edu/mcidas/ ), go to the SDI page by clicking "SSEC Desktop Ingestor (SDI)" in the Software section along the left side of the main page. From the SDI page you can select the "1999nov29" link to get to the download and installation instructions.

If you attempt to download the sdi1999nov29.sh or sdi1999nov29.tar.Z file you will be prompted for a login and password. Sites that obtain McIDAS software from SSEC should use the same login and password they use to download their McIDAS software. Sponsored McIDAS sites have been or will soon be notified of their login and password.

Read the section below that corresponds to your type of ingestor (GMS, GVAR, Meteosat, NOAAPORT, or POES) to determine if version 1999nov29 affects your ingestor and if/when SSEC recommends that you install it.

I. GMS Ingestors
Version 1999nov29 does not contain changes that impact GMS ingestors. You may optionally install version 1999nov29 on your GMS ingestors, though it's not required.

II. GVAR Ingestors
Version 1999nov29 contains Year 2000 fixes for relative position numbers on GVAR ingestors. Therefore, SSEC recommends that version 1999nov29 be installed *before* 1 January 2000, if possible, on your GVAR ingestors.

08 December 1999

Users of the GVAR SDI:

Last week we announced the availability of software upgrades to the SDIs. In the announcement pertaining to the GVAR SDI we said: "SSEC recommends that version 1999nov29 be installed *before* 1 January 2000, if possible, on your GVAR ingestors."

The Y2K fix that is in this upgrade was actually fixed in February 1999. The problem is with the data server, not the ingestor. Your SDI will ingest the data with no problem but the server will require that you have DAY= on every command (IMGDISP, IMGCOPY, etc) that requests a relative position number. So if your command uses the default relative position (0, meaning the most recent) it will not work. Initially we thought this problem would only exist when the dataset contain both 1999 and 2000 data. After more testing we have determined that the problem will exist on just 2000 data also. Due to this we are encouraging all sites to upgrade their GVAR SDI machines before 1 January 2000.

If you have questions please feel free to contact me or your program manager.

III. Meteosat Ingestors
Version 1999nov29 contains an option to read Xsector data and a fix to better determine the end of a sector. These features were not available on Meteosat ingestors built prior to 1999. Sites that received their Meteosat ingestors in 1999 do not need to install version 1999nov29. Sites that received their Meteosat ingestors prior to 1999 may optionally install version 1999nov29, though it's not required.

IV. NOAAPORT Ingestors
Version 1999nov29 contains some important fixes for NOAAPORT ingestors, including elimination of the need for the Exceptions file and ability to feed two machines. Therefore, SSEC recommends that version 1999nov29 be installed as soon as possible on your NOAAPORT ingestors.

V. POES Ingestors
Version 1999nov29 contains some fixes for POES ingestors, including calibration fixes for NOAA-15 and better handling of noisy data. Therefore, SSEC recommends that version 1999nov29 be installed on your POES ingestors at a time that's convenient for your site.

A notification email similar to this one will be sent each time a new SDI update is available from the MUG Web Site. If you have any questions or encounter any problems installing the SDI software, please contact the McIDAS Help Desk.
