This internal compression caused the MODIS image services to slow down dramatically. The MODIS Level 1b servers were updated to check for the INFO=HDFCOMPRESS tag in the local dataset definition. This will signal the server to change the internal I/O from line-by-line to entire image band read. This will speed up all single band ADDE requests, and will only allow single band transfers if INFO=HDFCOMPRESS is specified. For MSG bands 5 to 10, temperature differences of up to 2 degrees were seen. AREA files created before this fix will have the incorrect temperatures.
