NOAAPORT Receive SystemSince March 2005 the National Weather Service has been using Digital Video Broadcast via Satellite (DVB-S) as the transmission method for its NOAAPORT data stream. To accommodate future increases in data flow (from 10.24 Mbps in 2010 and earlier to as much as 30 Mbps in the future), the NWS transitioned in June 2011 from the DVB-S standard to the more efficient DVB-S2 standard. See NWS Data Management Notice DM06-11.01 for details and the NOAAPORT User's Page for additional information. In order to receive and process the data, the following are required: a DVB-S2 receiver (SSEC uses and recommends the Novra S300); an ingest computer with a second network interface card; installation of software to read and process the output of the DVB-S2 receiver; installation of LDM software to make the data available remotely. The NOAAPORT Receive System contains necessary LDM and DVB reader software and detailed installation and configuration instructions. Only McIDAS Users' Group (MUG) members subscribed to the McIDAS-XCD participation category can download the software. SSEC and the MUG thank Unidata for providing the software.
