The next generation geostationary weather satellite, GOES-R, successfully launched on November 19, 2016. NASA and NOAA have partnered with scientists at the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and its Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS)—and nationwide—to strengthen our satellite imaging capabilities. In addition to testing and evaluating GOES-R instruments and sensors, our researchers will take advantage of the higher quality imagery and data to develop tools that will improve critical weather forecasts for the United States.
