GOES-R Preparation


NOAA has begun a 10 year preparation to place advanced imager and sounder instrumentation in operational geostationary orbit on the GOES-R satellite. The Hyperspectral Environmental Suite (HES) sounder will provide high spectral resolution in the infrared and a high spatial resolution mode for mesoscale sounding capability. The Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) will be a 16 channel high spatial resolution imager with characteristics similar to the EOS MODIS instrument.

SSEC has partnered with NOAA for more than 25 years on weather satellite data acquisition, management, and archive, and on algorithm development, validation, and delivery. We are contributing to the GOES-R risk reduction by defining instrument measurement requirements, researching methods of data system design, and creating preliminary algorithms to test data processing methods and the validation of meteorological and environmental products. As part of these efforts, CIMSS is also engaging in activities that serve as a "Satellite Proving Ground" for new satellite products that are not yet operationally available in the National Weather Service (NWS) Advanced Weather Information Processing System (AWIPS) environment.
