FIRE/SHEBA 8 April, 1998

Weather

A small low was present on the Alaskan coast west of the area worked by the CV-580. Winds were very light at the surface. All of the trajectories were from the south indicating the air sampled on the flight came from Alaska. The lowest level trajectories indicated air from the coastal plain to the south and southwest. Upper level trajectories indicated air from the Alaskan-Canadian border about 1-2 days prior to the flight. Following the trajectories back in time indicated the air originated in the Aleutian area of the Pacific.

The 3.7 micron image indicates some high reflective stratus and some cirrus. Some open water can be seen on the image.

At the SHEBA ship winds were light and easterly. Air trajectory analysis shows that the surface and 1.0 km air came from northern Canada from the east, while upper level air came from the south over Alaska and the Pacific ocean.
