FIRE/SHEBA 15 April, 1998

Weather

The strong Aleutian low remained in the Bering Straight. Beaufort Sea trajectories in the low levels came from the west along the coast from the past two days. Back 3 or more days, the air came from the south over Alaska. From 3 km and above, the air came from the Pacific Ocean across Alaska.

SHEBA ship trajectories show large differences between the low levels, surface to 1.5 km, and the middle and upper levels. The low level air came from the east, the Beaufort Sea, and Canada while the upper level air (3 to 9 km) came from the south, the Pacific Ocean across western Alaska.

The satellite visible image show extensive open water. Some cirrus and stratus also can be seen on the IR and 3.7 micron images.
