FIRE/SHEBA 21 April, 1998

The CV-580 flew to Barrow and then to SHEBA ship.

Weather

A surface high occupied the eastern Beaufort Sea. A small surface low was northeast of the ship and a larger low very far south along the Asian coast of the Bering Sea. Winds were light and easterly at the surface at SHEBA ship. While upper level winds were from the southwest.

Trajectory analysis shows that surface air came from just east of the ship in the Beaufort Sea. All levels from 1 km and above, came from the Pacific through the Bering Straights. In the higher levels, 6 and 9 km, the air came from Siberia. The Barrow trajectories were similar.

The radar indicated cloud from 1.5 to 5.0 km. The lidar showed lower cloud bases. Visibility was reduced to 4 miles with fog in the 00 UT ship report. The HPRT satellite image at 2:25 UT had a mix of broken clouds. Ice patterns also were visible through the clouds to the east and north of SHEBA ship.
