FIRE/SHEBA 25 April, 1998

The CV-580 flew to a polynya at 70.5 N and 135 W.

Weather

The surface high pushed over SHEBA ship from the northwest. To the south, the Aleutian low was on Alaska's southern coast. Winds were generally northerly in most of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.

Trajectories to the polynya location were from the north at all levels. The air came from near the pole to the location of the flight. The 9 km trajectory loops around from western Alaska flowing up toward the pole and then south to the Beaufort Sea.

Trajectories to SHEBA ship also came from the north near the pole. At 6 and 9 km the trajectory tracks were a little more complicated originating in Siberia.
