The CV-580 flew from Barrow back to Inuvik.
The large low in the Bering Straights weakened and moved northeastward into Alaska. It is now located on the Alaskan northern east of Barrow. Winds weakened at SHEBA ship and over the Beaufort Sea. Broken mid-level clouds covered the Alaskan coast. Open water and ice boundaries could be seen around Barrow on the satellite images, and north of Inuvik.
Trajectories to SHEBA SHIP show that the surface air came from the Beaufort Sea directly to the east, while the 1.0, 1.5, and 3.0 km air came from a shorter distance near the SHEBA ship. The higher levels, 6.0 and 9.0 km, came from Siberia to the west directly through the Chukchi Sea.
Trajectories were calculated to 70.4 N and 142 W which is in the Beaufort Sea near the flight track of the CV-580. In this area, the air from all levels came from the Bering Sea (north of the Aleutian Islands) on a route directly across Alaska. This track was south and east of the low pressure system that moved out of the Bering Straights to the Alaskan coast.
