FIRE/SHEBA 26 July, 1998

Weather

The Beaufort high moved south near the Alaskan Coast east of Barrow. A strong low was positioned near the pole. A cold front overtook SHEBA ship during the day. Cloud bases dropped during the afternoon and rain was reported on the 00 UT weather observation. Radar found returns up to 11 km and showed the rapidly lowering cloud bases. A surface fog with 0.2 mile visibility was reported at 18:00 UT. At 00 UT the visibility was reported to be 4 miles implying that the rain was very light.

The trajectories to SHEBA ship came mainly from the west, except for the surface trajectory, which came from the south through the Bering Straight. All trajectories from 1.0 km and above, showed the origin of the air to be from western Siberia to northern Europe.
