FIRE/SHEBA 2 June, 1998

Weather

A small low, mainly in the upper air, was south of SHEBA ship in the Chukchi Sea. Winds were light. Cloud cover over the ship consisted of fairly dense stratus from near the surface to 4 km. Some breaks could be seen near SHEBA ship. The ship radar indicated the cloud density was decreasing through out the afternoon. The humidity profile indicated a possible thin layer at 6 km and a possible very thin cirrus layer around 9 km.

Over Barrow, the coast was nearly clear. Some stratus and cirrus could be seen north of the coast.

The trajectories to SHEBA ship came mainly from the south, except for the surface which came from the Beaufort Sea to the east. There was a large difference between the surface and 1.0 km trajectory. From 1.0 km and higher, the trajectories show all the air coming from the Bering Sea and crossing western Alaska.

The trajectories to Barrow all came from the south, the Bering Sea across western Alaska.
