FIRE/SHEBA 9 June, 1998

Weather

The tail end of a long cold front had passed through Barrow earlier in the day. Broken cirrus and altostratus clouds remained. Most cloud cover was to the east, however, some altostratus clouds were still crossing Barrow moving in from the southwest during the afternoon.

The trajectories to SHEBA ship show the air from all levels coming from the west across the Arctic Ocean. The lowest levels, surface and 1.0 km, trace back closer to the coast than the higher levels. The 6 and 9 km trajectories trace back close the the pole and then into Europe in 4-6 days.

The trajectories to Barrow also show the air coming from the west across the arctic ocean. The lowest levels, surface to 1.5 km, trace to the north in the first day, probably because of the recent front passage. Farther back in time, they trace to the west as the other levels do.
