FIRE/SHEBA 14 June, 1998

Weather

The large high covered the Beaufort Sea in nearly the same position as the previous day. SHEBA ship was mostly cloud free the entire day. Barrow experienced a mixture of broken and altostratus clouds. Satellite images indicate Barrow's cloud cover was confined to the middle and lower troposphere. Cirrus could not be seen on the images. Winds were from the east at Barrow similar to previous days.

The trajectories to SHEBA ship show the air from all levels coming from the Beaufort Sea to the east spiraling around the high pressure system. This was expected since the high had not moved its position in several days.

The trajectories to Barrow show all air coming from the east. The surface air came from the Beaufort Sea and the northern Canadian Islands cycling around the high pressure system. Other levels, 1.0-3.0 km, show air coming from the Alaskan coast of the Beaufort Sea to the east. The higher levels, 6 and 9 km, trace back to Juneau and the Canadian coast on the Pacific Ocean.
