Professional Experience

 

Jun Li has been with the University’s Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) since 1997, where he conducted research on advanced imager/sounder data processing, especially on the synergistic use of high spatial resolution imager data and high spectral resolution infrared sounder data for deriving atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles, cloud and aerosol/dust properties, as well as surface properties. He developed the algorithm for retrieving full spatial resolution atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles from high spectral resolution Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and applied those data for improving tropical cyclone forecasts in regional numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. He also developed and applied a retrieval methodology for processing the Advanced TOVS (ATOVS) data from the NOAA-15/16/17/18/19 polar orbiting satellites and the geostationary sounder data from GOES-8/9/10/11/12/13/14/15 satellites to obtain the real time atmospheric soundings and derived products. Dr. Jun Li also has several years of experience on hyperspectral algorithm development for instruments such as NASTI, AIRS, IASI, GIFTS and CrIS. He was MODIS science team member and developed the operational algorithms for retrieving the total ozone and precipitable water (MOD07/MYD07) from global EOS/MODIS measurements. He is also the principal investigator (PI) of the several GOES/POES related projects at CIMSS including International ATOVS Processing Package (IAPP), GOES-R trade studies, GOES-R legacy profile product development, GOES-R high impact weather studies, JPSS application for tropical cyclone forecasts, regional OSSE for future GOES, etc.  Dr. Li has got several international awards during his career for his scientific contributions and achievements, including 2002 NOAA David Johnson Award for "exceptional and unique contributions to the development of sounding retrieval algorithms for the nation's civil operational geostationary and polar-orbiting environmental satellites and leadership in defining the high-spectral resolution sounders for the next generation of satellites."  He has authored and co-authored more than 100 science papers in peered-reviewed journals.  He has severed session chairs and given invited talks at many academic institutes and scientific conferences.  His research areas and major accomplishments include:
1) Algorithm development for deriving geophysical parameters from both geostationary and polar-orbit satellites
The geophysical parameters to be retrieved included atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles, ozone profile, surface skin temperature and surface IR emissivities, dust height and optical thickness, cloud-top height and optical thickness, aerosol optical thickness, etc. Part of his algorithms have been used for NOAA operational product generation (current GOES Sounder soundings, GOES-R legacy profiles), EUMETSAT nowcasting product generation ( MST clear air products), NASA EOS science product generation (MOD/MYD07), deriving real time products from direct broadcast radiance measurements (IAPP), reprocessing of water vapor climate data record from ATOVS. Methodologies developed include synergistic use of advanced infrared sounder radiances and collocated high spatial resolution imager data, taking unique advantage of high temporal resolution information from geostationary satellite measurements into algorithm, cloud-clearing technique for handling clouds in deriving atmospheric soundings, etc.
2) Methodology development for improving the applications of satellite data in nowcasting and NWP forecasting

The methodologies developed for improve the assimilation of advanced IR sounder radiances include sounder sub-pixel cloud characterization and cloud-clearing technique that can derive the clear equivalent radiance spectrum in partially cloud cover with collocated high spatial resolution imager radiances.  The sub-pixel cloud characterization and cloud-clearing methodologies allow NPW models to assimilate thermodynamic information in cloudy regions and can significantly improve the impact of assimilating advanced IR sounder radiances in NWP for predicting the high impact weather events such as tropical cyclones and convective storms.  In order to prompt the research on improving satellite data assimilation in regional NWP, a near real time satellite data assimilation for tropical storm forecasts (SDAT) has been developed and running in near real time since August 2013, SDAT is now used as research testbed for improving the assimilation of high temporal/spatial resolution of GOES-R products (radiances, Atmospheric Motion Vectors, precipitable water, liquid water path, ice water path etc.), and JPSS advanced sounders (CrIS/ATMS).  In addition, he has also developed methodology for the application of thermodynamic information from future geostationary advanced IR sounder radiances in pre-convection environment.  
3) Trade studies on future instruments for geostationary satellites

Methodologies and technical approaches have been developed for trade studies on future geostationary advanced instruments to meet science and users’ requirement.  The trade studies include spectral coverage and resolution, spatial resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, viewing angle cutoff, etc. Research outcomes have been used by international community in developing geostationary advanced sounding systems (e.g., IRS).  In addition, as part of trade studies, regional quick Observing Simulation System Experiment (r-OSSE) has been developed to understand the future requirements and the utilization of high temporal and spatial resolution moisture information in regional NWP.

International Collaboration

 

National Satellite Meteorological Center (NSMC) of China. Collaboration on MODIS classification, dust monitoring using satellite infrared measurements, atmospheric temperature and moisture profile information extraction from hyperpectral infrared measurements, and the application of advanced IR soundings for high impact weather nowcasting and short range forecasting. Several peered reviewed science papers on collaborations were published.

 

European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). Dr. Li has long time collaborations with MTG (Meteosat Third Generation) team on next generation of geostationary satellites, some of algorithms and tools developed by his team have been used to study Europe's MTG instruments.

 

MSG (Meteosat Second Generation) nowcasting Satellite Application Facility (NWCSAF) at INM (Spanish National Meteorological Service). Dr. Li collabroated with NWCSAF on algorithm and software development for nowcasting product generation from advanced geostationary imager data (Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager, Advanced Baseline Imager).
