My Dear Draper:

Your esteemed favor of the 29th ultimo. came during my absence from the city, hence the delay in answering it.

In reply, let me say. -- I have received a copy of your "Kings Mountain," and so far as I have proceeded, have read it with absorbing interest. It seems to me a grand work of its kind, and a most valuable contribution to American History. It has pleased me beyond my most sanguine expectations; and I congratulate you on the entire success of your efforts. It is a splendid achievement.

That it will find a ready and large sale, I can see no reason to doubt.

I am not intimately acquainted with Gen'l. Sheridan, but have met him frequently, -- know him, and he knows me. If you think my services will be of any value in being the bearer of a copy of your book to him, I will most cheerfully undertake the duty, and in a favorable manner as possible, endeavor to secure his careful consideration, and without doubt, his commendation of the work.

With grateful thanks for the copy you have sent me, I remain

Very Sincerely your friend
S. V. Shipman
