{"id":41,"date":"2015-08-21T11:54:46","date_gmt":"2015-08-21T11:54:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www-test2.ssec.wisc.edu\/aeri\/?page_id=41"},"modified":"2021-07-28T06:06:28","modified_gmt":"2021-07-28T06:06:28","slug":"aeri-scene-mirror-cleaning-procedure","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/aeri\/kb\/procedures\/maintenance\/aeri-scene-mirror-cleaning-procedure\/","title":{"rendered":"AERI  Scene Mirror Cleaning Procedure"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Tools and Equipment Required<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Large phillips screwdriver<\/li>\n<li>Ball driver set<\/li>\n<li>Squirt bottle of 95% ethyl alcohol<\/li>\n<li>Squirt bottle of distilled water<\/li>\n<li>Absorbent wipes<\/li>\n<li>(Optional) Holding fixture for the scene mirror assembly<\/li>\n<li>(Optional) Small dish or bowl to catch water and alcohol run-off<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fcf8e3;\">\n<h3>Precaution<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The motor cables must NEVER be disconnected with the motor controller powered, as it can damage the stepper motor. \u00a0Always power off the motor controller or instrument first.<\/li>\n<li>Be careful if handling the drum around the scene mirror: it is thin and easily bent.<\/li>\n<li>Do not touch the mirror surface except by the stream of cleaning fluid.<\/li>\n<li>The mirror assembly must be registered upward upon replacement for proper optical\u00a0alignment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Procedure<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Stop data collection and power off the instrument:\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Press ctrl-c up to 3 times in the black Cygwin window to terminate ingest.<\/li>\n<li>Switch off the power bar in the AERI back-end.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Remove the front panel from the AERI front-end.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the scene mirror\/motor assembly from the front end structure:\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>The interior fan may obstruct removal of the assembly. \u00a0In this case the fan assembly can be slightly rotated by removing the 3 front screws holding it to the hex. \u00a0Alternatively the entire fan assembly can be removed.<\/li>\n<li>Disconnect the 4 cables going to the trapezoidal\u00a0plate (ensure that motor controller is not powered):\n<ol>\n<li>ENCODER<\/li>\n<li>MOTOR<\/li>\n<li>MO TEMP \/ PE TEMP<\/li>\n<li>S MIRROR<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Unscrew the 4 screws on the trapezoidal plate (see Fig. 1).<\/li>\n<li>Pull the assembly carefully straight out of the support structure (see Fig. 2).<\/li>\n<li>Place the assembly carefully onto a flat surface, or place it onto a holding fixture<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Inspect the area inside the hex (from where the mirror assembly was removed); note and clean any debris or obstructions\u00a0(grass, dirt, nests, etc.). \u00a0Inspect the mirror drum for obstructions and circularity. \u00a0Note the condition of the mirror surface before cleaning.<\/li>\n<li>Clean the mirror:\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>(Optional) Place some absorbing material (or a small dish or bowl) below the scene\u00a0mirror to catch the water and alcohol as it flows off the scene mirror.<\/li>\n<li>Flush the mirror surface with a stream of distilled water followed by a stream of\u00a095% ethyl alcohol. This process should be repeated at least three times (the more\u00a0times the better: use about 125 cc which is half of a squirt bottle). The flushing\u00a0should begin with distilled water and end with alcohol. Note: Do not\u00a0touch the\u00a0mirror surface except by the stream of fluid.<\/li>\n<li>When done flushing, wipe any excess drops of fluid that may be hanging from the\u00a0edges of the mirror drum.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Reinstall the mirror\/motor assembly:\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Carefully insert the assembly straight into the support structure (see Fig. 2).<\/li>\n<li>Register the front plate upward when tightening the four socket head screws.<\/li>\n<li>Reconnect the 4 cables going to the trapezoidal plate.<\/li>\n<li>Return the interior fan assembly to it\u2019s original position, if it was moved.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Reinstall the front panel onto the AERI front-end.<\/li>\n<li>Power on the instrument and resume data collection:\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Switch on the power bar in the AERI back-end<\/li>\n<li>Click ingest.bat on the desktop to begin ingest.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/aeri\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2015\/08\/Unscrewing-the-mirrormotor-assembly-e1440175496345.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-50\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/aeri\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2015\/08\/Unscrewing-the-mirrormotor-assembly-e1440175496345-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Figure 1: Unscrewing the mirror:motor assembly\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/aeri\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2015\/08\/Unscrewing-the-mirrormotor-assembly-e1440175496345-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/aeri\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2015\/08\/Unscrewing-the-mirrormotor-assembly-e1440175496345-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/aeri\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2015\/08\/Unscrewing-the-mirrormotor-assembly-e1440175496345-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Figure 1.
