Mission Overview

Included below is a listing of the various phases/aspects and their objectives for the MBE mission.

1. Highest-Priority Pointed Phase

  • Duration: 4 months
  • Objective: locate and study missing baryons
  • Observations: single pointing or series of pointings

2. All-Sky Survey

  • Duration: 6 months
  • One complete survey of entire sky
  • Instrument scans circles advancing ~3.7' per orbit

3. Second Pointed Phase

  • Duration: 7 months
  • Includes 2 months of Guest Observer (GO) Program

4. Phase F

  • If cryogen remains after second pointed phase
  • Up to four more months entirely GO Program

5. National E/PO Program

  • Experienced E/PO team of educators & scientists
  • MBE Science aligned with education standards
  • Targeted involvement of underserved communities
