{"id":1697,"date":"2019-10-21T10:40:04","date_gmt":"2019-10-21T16:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/?p=1697"},"modified":"2019-10-22T08:58:20","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T14:58:20","slug":"typhoon-bualoi-on-21-october-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/posts\/typhoon-bualoi\/typhoon-bualoi-on-21-october-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Bualoi on 21 October 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At 1500Z on 21 October, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoc.navy.mil\/jtwc\/jtwc.html\">Joint Typhoon Warning Center<\/a> (JTWC) stated that <strong>Typhoon<\/strong> Bualoi had sustained winds of\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-15Z-Oct-21-2019.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">105knts or ~120mph<\/a>. This is the equivalent of a <strong>Category 3 <\/strong>storm in the Atlantic basin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-discussion-15Z-Oct-212019-zoom.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1706\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-discussion-15Z-Oct-212019-zoom-300x111.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-discussion-15Z-Oct-212019-zoom-300x111.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-discussion-15Z-Oct-212019-zoom.png 439w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jma.go.jp\/en\/typh\/\">Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) Tokyo<\/a> stated that the maximum winds at the center were 85knts (~95mph). The difference is due to differing methods of determining the winds and due to the fact that JTWC adopts a 1 min mean wind speed, but RSMC Tokyo adopts 10 mins mean wind speed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JMA-Bualoi-15Z-Oct-212019-_Zoom.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1711\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JMA-Bualoi-15Z-Oct-212019-_Zoom-263x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JMA-Bualoi-15Z-Oct-212019-_Zoom-263x300.png 263w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JMA-Bualoi-15Z-Oct-212019-_Zoom.png 305w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As previously mentioned, while this doesn&#8217;t affect forecasts for this storm, this sort of difference in measurement could mean the difference between a tropical storm warning or a high wind warning.<\/p>\n<p>S-NPP first saw Typhoon Bualoi at ~1504Z on the far western edge of the pass. The last quarter moon (50% illumination) providing enough illumination to show the expanse of the eastern side of the storm. Because it was on the edge of the scan and the lunar geometry meant that there was only faint moonlight illuminating the storm as it approached the island of Anatahan. Due to the lunar geometry, the DNB imagery provided a much more illuminated scene of the storm, showing the wide range of convective feeder bands stretching to the northern Mariana Islands. In addition to the closed eye, one notable feature was that that the storm was not entirely symmetrical. This is further emphasized when comparing it to the I05 (11\u03bcm) imagery from NOAA-20, as seen more on the western edge of the eye than being symmetrical about the circulation, as seen in the DNB and I05 (11\u03bcm) \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also of note is that as of the 1604 N20 pass, it appears that the center of circulation of Bualoi is just about to impact Farallon De Medinilla, which is the smallest island in the archipelago and used to be used by the US Navy for military and bombing exercises.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, while circulation is somewhat easily seen in the I05 (11\u03bcm) and DNB imagery, its somewhat hard to tell what is going on within the storm, as seen in the ATMS 88.2GHz Brightness temperature, see below as compared to the I05 But while GCOM-W1 was out of position, there are other microwave sensors, such as the SSMIS-18 satellite. In addition, one could say that the convection around the eye became a little more filled in, perhaps an indication of the storm strengthening. Utilizing this, along with geostationary imagery suggest would suggest that the storm was strengthening at the time. This is something that the 15Z forecast from the JTWC says would happen. \u00a0As seen below, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center predicted that Bualoi strengthen from 105knts at 15Z to 115kts by 00Z, which is indeed what happened<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-forecast-15Z-Oct-21-2019.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1707 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-forecast-15Z-Oct-21-2019-300x199.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-forecast-15Z-Oct-21-2019-300x199.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-forecast-15Z-Oct-21-2019-768x509.gif 768w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-forecast-15Z-Oct-21-2019-1024x679.gif 1024w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-forecast-15Z-Oct-21-2019-325x216.gif 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, that is <em>exactly<\/em> what happened. A quick check of Guam and Rota showed power still on those islands.
