{"id":1849,"date":"2019-10-24T09:10:01","date_gmt":"2019-10-24T15:10:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/?p=1849"},"modified":"2019-10-24T17:11:54","modified_gmt":"2019-10-24T23:11:54","slug":"typhoon-bualoi-on-24-october-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/posts\/typhoon-bualoi\/typhoon-bualoi-on-24-october-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Bualoi on 24 October 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At 1500Z on 22 October, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoc.navy.mil\/jtwc\/jtwc.html\">Joint Typhoon Warning Center<\/a> (JTWC) stated that <strong>Typhoon<\/strong> Bualoi had sustained winds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-15Z-Oct-24-2019.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">90knts or ~103mph<\/a>, making it equivalent to a <strong>Category 2 <\/strong>storm in the Atlantic basin. In addition, they note the storm is becoming extratropical.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-discussion-15Z-Oct-24-2019-zoom.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1856\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-discussion-15Z-Oct-24-2019-zoom-300x93.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"93\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-discussion-15Z-Oct-24-2019-zoom-300x93.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JTWC-Bualoi-discussion-15Z-Oct-24-2019-zoom.png 430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jma.go.jp\/en\/typh\/\">Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) Tokyo<\/a> stated that the maximum winds at the center were 85knts (~97mph). The difference is due to differing methods of determining the winds and due to the fact that JTWC adopts a 1 min mean wind speed, but RSMC Tokyo adopts 10 mins mean wind speed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JMA-Bualoi-15Z-Oct-24-2019-zoom.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JMA-Bualoi-15Z-Oct-24-2019-zoom-264x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JMA-Bualoi-15Z-Oct-24-2019-zoom-264x300.png 264w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/JMA-Bualoi-15Z-Oct-24-2019-zoom.png 339w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unlike 23 October 2019, only 2 satellites (S-NPP and NOAA-20) observed Bualoi as it transitioned to an extratropical system.<\/p>\n<p>Suomi-NPP (S-NPP) was the first polar-orbiting satellite to see\u00a0 Typhoon Bualoi at ~1553Z, with a close to nadir overpass. The I05 (11\u03bcm) brightness temperature again showed dry air entraining on into the storm as it becomes extratropical, losing the distinctive circulation one sees with tropical systems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/I05_NPP_102419_1553_Bualoi_nolabels.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1875\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/I05_NPP_102419_1553_Bualoi_nolabels-300x209.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/I05_NPP_102419_1553_Bualoi_nolabels-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/I05_NPP_102419_1553_Bualoi_nolabels-768x535.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/I05_NPP_102419_1553_Bualoi_nolabels-1024x713.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/10\/I05_NPP_102419_1553_Bualoi_nolabels.png 1415w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The waning crescent (28% illumination) and lunar geometry meant that the storm itself was illuminated primarily by airglow in the Day Night Band.
