{"id":2784,"date":"2019-12-17T17:53:31","date_gmt":"2019-12-17T23:53:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/?p=2784"},"modified":"2019-12-30T16:20:03","modified_gmt":"2019-12-30T22:20:03","slug":"australian-wildfires-from-17-december-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/posts\/2019-australian-wildfires\/australian-wildfires-from-17-december-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian wildfires from 17 December 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/live\/2019\/dec\/17\/nsw-fires-heatwave-temperature-australia-bushfires-wa-qld-fires-new-south-wales-gospers-mountain-sydney-heatwave-latest-updates-live-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wildfires<\/a> in Australia have continued to burn and continuing to\u00a0produced large amounts of smoke, which have encompassed the region, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/11\/19\/australia\/sydney-smoke-bushfires-intl-scli\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sydney, Australia<\/a>. In addition, 17 December 2019 was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/weather\/2019\/12\/18\/australia-has-its-hottest-day-record-sydney-residents-brace-heat-fires-smoke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hottest average temperature on record<\/a> for Australia, with a nationally averaged temperature of 105.6 \u00b0F (40.9\u00b0C), according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.<\/p>\n<p>The smoke from the large wildfires were easily seen during the day by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.data.jma.go.jp\/mscweb\/en\/himawari89\/space_segment\/spsg_ahi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI)<\/a> on the Japanese Meteorological Agency&#8217;s operational geostationary satellite, Himawari-8. As seen in the Band 3 (0.64\u03bcm) channel from 0300-0350Z, the smoke can be seen travelling inland and then wrapping around to the south and back over the coast.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/12\/AHI_B03_Aust_2019_12_17_03Z.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2813 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/12\/AHI_B03_Aust_2019_12_17_03Z-300x209.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/12\/AHI_B03_Aust_2019_12_17_03Z-300x209.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/12\/AHI_B03_Aust_2019_12_17_03Z-1024x713.gif 1024w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/12\/AHI_B03_Aust_2019_12_17_03Z-768x535.gif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition, Band 1 (0.47\u03bcm) on AHI, which is also on the GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), is also extremely useful for <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aerosol and smoke detection<\/a>, which can easily be seen in the animated (below) and static imagery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/12\/AHI_B01_Aust_2019_12_17_03Z.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2814 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/12\/AHI_B01_Aust_2019_12_17_03Z-300x209.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/12\/AHI_B01_Aust_2019_12_17_03Z-300x209.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/12\/AHI_B01_Aust_2019_12_17_03Z-1024x713.gif 1024w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/12\/AHI_B01_Aust_2019_12_17_03Z-768x535.gif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Again, note how the smoke is being blown inland before wrapping back around to the south and then back out over the ocean. Several of these trace gases, such as ozone and CO, can be hazardous to human health, especially those with breathing issues. This is where derived products from the NOAA Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/QuickGuide_NUCAPS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NUCAPS<\/a>) can prove useful. It is expected that one would have higher total column concentrations of CO as the intense fires burned. It is also interesting to do a comparison with the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite&#8217;s\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tropomi.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TROPOMI<\/a> Vertical Column CO at 0301 UTC, roughly 50 minutes before the NOAA-20 overpass. The addition of the TROPOMI data could be used with NUCAPS datain a similar manner to how VIIRS data is used in combination with geostationary data. That is to say, the higher temporal NUCAPS data (which is produced from the two JPSS satellites as well as MetOp-A\/B\/C) could be then supplemented with higher resolution, lower latency, information from the Sentinel-5 Precursor mission as well as Sentinel-5.<\/p>\n<p>At night, one would expect the inland concentrations to go up, as the there is less wind blowing (i.e. the smoke is not being pushed around as much). The situation at night was such that there were differences in the number of fires observed by NOAA-20 at ~1507UTC as compared to ~12 hours prior as seen by the VIIRS Active Fire This is important since <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/QuickGuide_NUCAPS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NUCAPS<\/a> can be retrieved from a variety of instruments and is not limited to visible imagery, like imager-based aerosol detection algorithms.
