The 1500Z, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoc.navy.mil\/jtwc\/jtwc.html\">Joint Typhoon Warning Center<\/a> (JTWC) stated that Typhoon Vongfong had strengthened,\u00a0having winds of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/11\/wp2919web_JTWC_112819_15Z.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">90knts, or ~103mph<\/a>. This would make it a\u00a0<strong>Category 2<\/strong>\u00a0storm in the Atlantic basin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-13-at-2.32.07-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3262\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-13-at-2.32.07-PM-300x85.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"85\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-13-at-2.32.07-PM-300x85.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-13-at-2.32.07-PM-768x217.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-13-at-2.32.07-PM.png 828w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jma.go.jp\/en\/typh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) Tokyo<\/a> stated that the maximum winds at the center were 70knts or ~92mph. While slightly different than the speed the JTWC showed, this difference is due to differing methods of determining the winds and due to the fact that JTWC adopts a 1 min mean wind speed, but RSMC Tokyo adopts 10 mins mean wind speed. As with the JTWC discussion, it would make Vongfong a <strong>Category 1<\/strong>\u00a0storm in the Atlantic basin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-13-at-2.31.06-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3261\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-13-at-2.31.06-PM-265x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-13-at-2.31.06-PM-265x300.png 265w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-13-at-2.31.06-PM.png 668w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As has been discussed previously, this doesn\u2019t affect forecasts for this storm, this sort of difference in measurement could mean the difference between a tropical storm warning or a high wind warning<\/p>\n<p>NOAA-20 saw Typhoon Vongfong at ~1703Z, at near nadir. The I05 (11\u03bcm) imagery showed features that one would expect from an intensifying storm, including overshooting tops and tropospheric gravity waves. In addition, a clear eye could be \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, GCOM-W1 was not in an ideal position to observe Vongfong. However, the ATMS instrument, which is on both NOAA-20 and S-NPP, can look into the inner part of the storm. While not as high of resolution as AMSR2, the 88.2GHz imagery from ATMS shows that the colder temperatures (where the convection is located) surrounds the circulation center<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/ATMS_N20_88.2_051320_1703_Vongfong_labels.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3273 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/ATMS_N20_88.2_051320_1703_Vongfong_labels-300x155.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/ATMS_N20_88.2_051320_1703_Vongfong_labels-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/ATMS_N20_88.2_051320_1703_Vongfong_labels-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/ATMS_N20_88.2_051320_1703_Vongfong_labels-768x397.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/ATMS_N20_88.2_051320_1703_Vongfong_labels.png 1415w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The forecast from JTWC has Typhoon Vongfong intensifying to ~115knts by 14 May 2020, which would be the equivalent to a <strong>Category 4<\/strong> storm in the Atlantic.
