While slightly different than the speed the JTWC showed, this difference is due to differing methods of determining the winds and due to the fact that JTWC adopts a 1 min mean wind speed, but RSMC Tokyo adopts 10 mins mean wind speed. As with the JTWC discussion, it would also make Vongfong a <strong>strong tropical storm <\/strong>in the Atlantic basin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-15-at-11.23.18-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-15-at-11.23.18-AM-267x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-15-at-11.23.18-AM-267x300.png 267w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-15-at-11.23.18-AM.png 674w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>S-NPP first observed Severe Tropical Storm Vongfong at ~1713Z close to nadir, providing the best viewing geometry of the storm. The I05 (11\u03bcm) imagery clearly showed that the western side of the storm was sheared, with the remnant convection remaining offshore.
