By 16 May 2020 Amphan became a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm. At 09:00 UTC of May 17, Amphan intensified into a <strong>very severe cyclonic storm <\/strong>and within 12 hours, the storm had developed an eye.\u00a0 On 17 May 2020,\u00a0 the 2100Z the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoc.navy.mil\/jtwc\/jtwc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JTWC<\/a>) stated that Amphan winds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/JTWC-Amphan-21Z-17-May-2020-Discussion.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">115knts, or ~132mph<\/a>. This would make it a\u00a0<strong>Category 4<\/strong>\u00a0storm in the Atlantic basin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/JTWC-Amphan-21Z-17-May-2020-Discussion.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3383 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/JTWC-Amphan-21Z-17-May-2020-Discussion-300x68.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"68\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/JTWC-Amphan-21Z-17-May-2020-Discussion-300x68.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/JTWC-Amphan-21Z-17-May-2020-Discussion.png 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsmcnewdelhi.imd.gov.in\/index.php?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RSMC New Dehli<\/a> estimated maximum sustained winds at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/RMSCNewDelhi_051720_discussion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">21Z<\/a> of 155-165 km\/hr (96-102mph), which would make it a\u00a0<strong>Category 3-4<\/strong> storm in the Atlantic<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/RMSCNewDelhi_051720_intensity.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3389 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/RMSCNewDelhi_051720_intensity-300x18.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"18\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/RMSCNewDelhi_051720_intensity-300x18.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/jpss-sdoc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2020\/05\/RMSCNewDelhi_051720_intensity.png 685w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were only passes from NOAA-20 and S-NPP, with GCOM-W1 being out of\u00a0 position to observe Amphan. This discussion is broken into two parts: VIIRS and microwave imagery<\/p>\n<p><strong>VIIRS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NOAA-20 observed Amphan first at ~1907Z on the western edge of the scan followed by a near nadir pass of SNPP at ~1957Z. As you would expect both NOAA-20 and S-NPP showed the defining characteristics of a mature tropical cyclone. These included convection surrounding the circulation center along with cold cloud top temperatures and tropospheric gravity waves. The rapid intensification of Amphan was strong enough to produce mesospheric gravity waves. With the ongoing CoVID-19 pandemic, this will effect the evacuations and the response to the landfall.
