Behind the scenes, numerous groups work together to keep the center from falling into chaos. From the building itself to the people in it, these dedicated people handle it all with deft expertise.

Building Management

A new coat: Close to the entire building received a fresh coat of paint in 2004.

Power upgrade: Building management began the process of a major power upgrade in the SSEC Data Center. They started to remove the old wiring and put in new wiring to bring it back up to code. Two large Uninterruptible Power Supplies will be installed on the seventh floor to handle critical operational equipment.  Management hopes to have an “up” time of one hour in case of a power outage.

New storms: As part of the Wisconsin Energy Initiative (WEI), most building windows received new storm windows.

Making the center energy efficient: Also in compliance with the WEI, electricians spent several months working in the building. One group pulled out all the old network cables, and also installed lights and more power outlets in the wiring closets to prepare for the new 21st Century Network. Another group rewired all the controls for the HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, & Air Conditioning) system.  This will all be controlled remotely from a computer at the UW’s Physical Plant through an automated system called Metasys.  These alterations will help lower energy costs substantially. Also, WEI chose the roof of SSEC to install a temperature sensor that will help control the climate in all of the buildings on campus.

Cleaning up Randall St.: In the Randall St. building, the third floor was cleaned and repainted. Building crews also installed new network systems and phones. The light fixtures were changed to more efficient lighting. Old air conditioners were removed and, in the spring of 2005, new energy efficient models will be installed.  It is a bit more comfortable there now ... and they still have SIX bathrooms!

Human Resources

High hiring rate: SSEC’s Human Resources staff continued to handle a high rate of hiring, including 32 academic and classified hires as well as 34 undergraduate and graduate student hires in 2004.

Changing it up: During 2004, Human Resources processed 34 academic and classified title and wage changes. They also accommodated 21 student wage increases.

Helping out visitors: Human Resources processed 27 visas for visiting and traveling scientists.

Purchasing and Accounting

Full purchasing delegation achieved: Judy Cohen worked to obtain full purchasing delegation for SSEC Purchasing. Previously, purchasing could only delegate up to the $25K level. Full delegation means Official Sealed Bids and Requests for Proposals can be done entirely in-house, making the process faster and more efficient.

New accounting interface: SSEC moved to a new accounting interface, which involved an upgrade from a DOS system to a Windows-based system.

Shipping and Receiving

Hand-held scanners: In July 2004, while preparing to ship the Hot Water Drill, SSEC shipping and receiving personnel used their first automated shipper created from scanned bar-codes. Dave Allen, with the help of others on the third floor, provided the software and the procedure. The shipper is a form used to document shipments made by SSEC for inventory tracking and insurance purposes. Using a hand-held computer with a built-in bar-code scanner programmed to scan and record to a database, they gather data and then transfer it to the shipper program that automatically produces any required documents.

Handling field experiments: Shipping and Receiving handled the needs of five major aircraft instrument field experiments.
