Through the Atmosphere Published

The Summer 2012 issue of SSEC’s twice-yearly publication, Through the Atmosphere, is available online, or in hard copy from Mark Hobson or Maria Vasys.

This issue focuses on NASA’s newest climate studying satellite (and the first named for an individual), the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership, or Suomi NPP. Verner Suomi, known as the father of meteorological satellite studies, was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who envisioned and created, along with Professor Robert Parent, the first instrument to study Earth’s climate from orbit.

Explorer 7, launched in 1959, carried that instrument, and the new Suomi NPP satellite carries on the work begun so long ago.

This issue of “Through the Atmosphere” celebrates the history, the ongoing work, and the future of satellite meteorology. Take a closer look at the cutting edge of climate studies. Let us know what you think of “Through the Atmosphere.”
