Ad Hoc Committee on Fossil Fuel Use and Climate Change

The University Committee added an academic staff member to their ad hoc committee and this new member was our very own Margaret Mooney, who has a long track record working on issues around climate literacy and environmental sustainability. The Ad Hoc Committee submitted their report to the Faculty Senate on the last day of 2013. Although she joined late in the process, Mooney contributed by writing the section on Climate Change Impacts and the first draft of the Executive Summary.

Budget Model Review Committee

A committee has been assembled to prepare a white paper about the possibility of utilizing and implementing a new budget model to support decision-making and resource allocation on the UW Campus. Academic staff representatives are Noel Radomski and Anne Gunther. This group will:

Classified Staff have elected an Executive Committee and held two kickoff events in December. Kate Kaminski was a member of the Classified Staff Advisory Committee tasked with organizing the elections. Kate gave an excellent speech at the early morning event  following Vice Chancellor Darrell Bazzell’s opening remarks.

Committees on Bullying

An Ad Hoc Committee on Bullying was formed this spring by Dean Shim of the School of Human Ecology and Dean Ortalo-Magne of the School of Business. Additionally, the University Committee formed another Ad Hoc Committee on Civility and Bullying in the Academic Workplace this fall. The Academic Staff Executive Committee (ASEC) chair serves as a member of both committees. The UW-Madison is the only Big Ten institution that does not have bullying policies or codes of conduct in place to address these issues..

A few items from the HR Design Strategic Plan that do not require legislative approval are proceeding. Policies, resources and training are being developed in the following areas for governance review this spring:

Martin Cadwallader, Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Chancellor for Research, is stepping down from this combined position at the end of the summer. Chancellor Blank is exploring the option of separating the role into two positions. The University Committee has formed a working group on leadership changes in the office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of the Graduate School. Petra Schroeder, Associate Dean for Administration in the Graduate School has been appointed to the committee to represent academic staff. The committee is expected to deliver a report, with recommendations, in early spring. The report will be sent to the Faculty Senate for approval before summer.

Purchasing Director Search and Screen Committee

ASEC received a request for nominees for the Purchasing Director Search and Screen Committee, a position currently held by Mike Hardiman, who is retiring. Given that SSEC is  one of the few places on campus with delegated purchasing authority and extensive purchasing volume, we are excited to learn that Will Robus has been selected to serve on this committee.

If you have concerns or questions about these, or other topics, please contact a governance representative and make your voice heard.
