Hosting Events

Conferences, workshops, and meetings are a critical way that we discuss and disseminate our research. With the arrival of warmer temperatures, grass greening, and plants blooming, we now enter into our most popular time of year to host these important events on campus. I have a few critical points of information to share to help ensure that your campus event is a success.

First of all, I’m pleased to announce that Maria Vasys has accepted an outreach specialist position with the new Office of Education and Public Outreach in the operational area of CIMSS within SSEC. As part of her new position, she will be providing planning for workshops, conferences, and training events, including the preparation and dissemination of materials and logistics support. Please be sure to discuss your upcoming events with Maria!

As a friendly reminder for any event, please bear in mind that the campus and state have very strict rules regarding the sale, service, purchasing, and consumption of alcohol for campus events. If you hope to have alcohol as part of your event, please be sure to let Maria know early on in your planning process to help us address those rules. In order to serve alcohol at events located within the AOSS building or at the SSEC leased warehouse, we are required to obtain a service permit which takes some time. Maria will work with Jenny Hackel and/or John Roberts to assist you in obtaining the proper permit. SSEC has a permit that covers our monthly Hail/Farewells and annual holiday party. All other events require their own permit.

Lastly, here are a few more important points of contact for assistance:

This certainly isn’t a comprehensive guide to event planning, but I hope this helps you find the resources that you need to host a successful event. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to call, stop by, or send me an email.

Sequestration and Proposals

Sequestration impacts are being felt across the university, leaving many folks feeling in limbo and concerned. How can there possibly be any good news out of this? 3rd floor has submitted an unprecedented 40+ proposals in the month of May alone, with few signs that our proposal volume will be slowing. Additionally, we continue to win a very high percentage of those proposals. My applause goes out to our ambitious and determined SSEC/CIMSS PIs, the 3rd floor proposal processing team, and RSP for the truly impressive outputs as of late. Keep up the great work!

Retirement

Additionally with the arrival of warmer temperatures, grass greening, and plants blooming, it appears that the lure of being outside the building has become too irresistible to pass up for Tom Achtor. After 33 years with SSEC/CIMSS, Tom is retiring to the great Wisconsin northwoods, California sunshine, and hopefully many years of abundant opportunities to travel, develop hobbies, and enjoy quality family time. Congratulations Tom! We will miss you terribly.
