CIMSS Symposium Fosters Connections
“We are here to exchange information. And we are here to discuss the future – not only what is going to be, but what ought to be.”
Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Director Steve Ackerman welcomed participants and audience to the second CIMSS Symposium on 06 May 2013 in the Marquee Theater in the UW-Madison Union South.
“We are a large organization spread over several floors in our building,” Ackerman says, “and one of our challenges is finding a way of communicating internally our work. CIMSS is about 135 people. It’s tough to get everyone into the same room at the same time. The point of gathering in this theater, which is a comfortable and well-equipped facility, is to foster more collaboration and to highlight our activities in research, education, and outreach. It is also an opportunity to look into the future to define new directions to undertake. ”
In an effort to make connections outside the organization, Ackerman invited James Hurley, Director of the Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute, to present at the Symposium. The Institute is part of a national network of 32 university-based programs dedicated to the stewardship and sustainable use of the nation's Great Lakes and ocean resources. Hurley highlighted the efforts of his organization, and opened the door for possible future collaborations.

SSEC Director Hank Revercomb gave an overview and progress report on the upcoming alliance with GeoMetWatch to launch the new generation STORM instrument. Kathy Strabala presented an update on Direct Broadcast activities. Other speakers were Jeff Key and Andy Heidinger of NOAA’s Advanced Satellite Products Branch.
SSEC Director Hank Revercomb, along with co-presenters Dave Tobin and Liam Gumley,
discussed the upcoming working
relationship with GeoMetWatch.

“These events are not just presentations of the work going on,” Ackerman says. “We are here not only to inform, but discuss as well. We are meeting here to encourage engagement. I think it’s a great way to start.”
