Director's Note

Fred Best

With the retirement of JoAnn Banks we are left a big void to fill in the area of Building Manager. This duty is now be carried out by the team of Mark Werner and Dave Jones. The building manager plays a key role in the Center, performing a wide variety of duties. This is a good time to clarify when to contact the Building Manager, and when you should contact someone else. In this Director’s Note I will summarize several situations that you may run into in your day-to-day lives at SSEC and what you should do in response.

If there is a need to evacuate the building because of a fire, or bomb threat, pull the fire alarm and evacuate the building.

If there is an immediate threat of harm to a person or the building, call 911.

Use an SSEC landline or your cell phone.

Note: If you are using a Centrex phone you do not need to dial 9 before dialing 9-1-1. However, if you do not dial the 9 for an outside line first, it may take a few seconds longer for the phone system to realize you are dialing 9-1-1 and get you connected. You can also dial 8 before dialing 9-1-1. The important thing to remember is, even if you hear a pause before the line is connected, stay on the line. If you hang up and re-dial you will start the process from the beginning.

To report on any of the following, call the SSEC Building Manager at 3-6764, or email
building-manager@ssec.wisc.edu.
