SSEC Summer Picnic at Union South

In lieu of a traditional summer picnic, SSEC hosted its Summer Party at Union South Tuesday 14 August 2012 from 4 to 7 pm in the Sett Recreation area. Food, beverages, bowling (including shoe rental), and pool were included in the registration fee; what a deal! (Kids 6 and under were free.)

The event really caught a wave: 125 adults and 39 kids signed up for the festivities. Sign ups for bowling kept the lanes filled. The pool tables racked up lots of happy users. Beverages, snacks, and conversation flowed freely in the Sett.

Because of the number of people attending, a separate food and dining area was set up on the 3rd Floor. Plenty of pizza, veggies and dip, fruit plates, and dessert, pleased the large crowd.

A “family-oriented” tour of the AOS Building started with a brief look at the 3D globe, then moved up to 2nd Floor where Jordan Gerth displayed the capabilities of the CAVE. At the AMRC on the 9th Floor, Lee Wellhouse described the life of an Antarctica researcher. And wrapping it all up was a splendid view from the roof.

Judging by the flow of emails and comments, the party was a huge success for all concerned. Holding the event in the conveniently located and attractive venue of the Sett was somewhat more expensive than the usual outdoor picnic, an expense covered by an existing balance in the party fund and by increased contributions from the SSEC directors. But the overwhelmingly positive response to the event means that this venue and timing will be strongly considered for the next such event.

Many thanks to our extremely generous SSEC directors for their support and to the party coordinators (Amanda Thornton, Jenny Hackel, Kelly Roth, Soniya Patel, Maria Vasys, and Mark Hobson) for making this event possible!
