{"id":12321,"date":"2019-10-31T17:41:45","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T17:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/?p=12321"},"modified":"2019-10-31T17:41:45","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T17:41:45","slug":"itsc-22-international-tovs-study-conference-brings-together-global-community-of-experts-in-satellite-meteorology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/articles\/12321","title":{"rendered":"ITSC-22: International TOVS Study Conference brings together global community of experts in satellite meteorology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/itwg\/itsc\/index.html\">International TOVS Study Conference<\/a> (ITSC) convenes in Saint-Sauveur, Qu\u00e9bec, Canada. \u00a0The meeting provides an opportunity for hundreds of researchers from around the world to share ideas and new techniques for improving weather forecasting and satellite products, all based on innovative uses of satellite data.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12322\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12322\" class=\"wp-image-12322 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2019\/10\/noaa-20-photo-325x155.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2019\/10\/noaa-20-photo-325x155.png 325w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2019\/10\/noaa-20-photo-768x366.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2019\/10\/noaa-20-photo-1026x489.png 1026w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2019\/10\/noaa-20-photo.png 1120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: NOAA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>More than a dozen scientists from the UW-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies<\/a> (CIMSS) are attending and presenting on topics including advances in direct broadcast capabilities, refinements in Numerical Weather Prediction and evaluation of new satellite data.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/articles\/8232\">First started in 1983<\/a> at the behest of the International Radiation Commission and chaired by former CIMSS director William Smith, the initial conference aimed to assist the international community in accessing data from US polar orbiting satellites, improving sounding data and procedures for using those data and providing a forum for collaborative research.\u00a0 That successful first meeting set the stage for those that would follow and has since expanded to include many disciplines within satellite meteorology and the atmospheric sciences.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s conference co-chairs are Liam Gumley from SSEC and Vincent Guidard from the National Centre for Meteorology in France.
