For the 10th year, the 2020 Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences (AOSS) Photo Contest showcases the passions of weather photographers \u2013 university students, scientists, staff and professors — as they seek to understand and capture our natural world through the camera\u2019s lens. Their pictures offer glimpses into the intricacies, and mysteries, of our atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year\u2019s winning entry, Auroras over northern Minnesota<\/em>, was submitted by Isaac Schluesche, a student in the UW-Madison Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. Schluesche shot this image while hiking with his father near Schroeder, Minnesota. Presented in this year\u2019s slideshow are the top three photos, the honorable mentions along with all of the stunning images submitted for 2020. \u201cI knew that solar conditions could be favorable for an aurora event, so once we arrived, we drove an hour or so into the woods, found a lake that had a good northern view, and waited,\u201d he says. \u201cBy 3:00 a.m. we were treated to the spectacle pictured!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
