{"id":13142,"date":"2020-09-23T19:26:57","date_gmt":"2020-09-23T19:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/?p=13142"},"modified":"2020-12-21T19:18:18","modified_gmt":"2020-12-21T19:18:18","slug":"coldest-greenland-temperature-confirmed-by-wmo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/articles\/13142","title":{"rendered":"Coldest Greenland temperature confirmed by WMO"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nearly 30 years after recording a temperature of  minus 69.6\u00b0C ( minus 93.2\u00b0F) in Greenland, the measurement has been verified by the <a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/media\/press-release\/wmo-verifies-696%C2%B0c-greenland-temperature-northern-hemisphere-record\">World Meteorological Organization<\/a> as the coldest recorded temperature in the northern hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The measurement was first recorded by a University of Wisconsin-Madison <a href=\"https:\/\/amrc.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">Antarctic Meteorological Research Center<\/a> Automatic Weather Station in December 1991. An AWS is a standalone instrument suite developed by Space Science and Engineering Center and AMRC scientists and engineers to collect numerous environmental parameters such as air temperature, pressure, humidity, wind direction and speed. Credit: NOAA, George Weidner<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, these data have come to provide a benchmark for understanding weather extremes and climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe more data you have, the more you can understand what\u2019s going on globally, and make important political and environmental decisions related to climate change,\u201d says George Weidner, emeritus researcher with the UW-Madison Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. \u201cIt is also an important moment for the AWS systems in that their data are being accepted as official records.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weidner is the lead author on a new paper published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/qj.3901\">Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society<\/a> this month that documents the low temperature finding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2007, the WMO created an <a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.asu.edu\/#global\">online archive<\/a> of weather and climate extremes around the globe, helping to set benchmarks for future climate research. Other measurements include record high temperatures, wind speeds, and the impact of tropical cyclones, including the deadliest in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extreme measurements like that in Greenland undergo a rigorous review process to make sure they are accurate and there is agreement with other meteorological data and weather forecast models. Due to the quality and preservation of the AWS station data provided by the AMRC, the WMO was able to verify the 1991 temperature and log it as part of the official record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Weidner, this cold temperature was the result of several atmospheric conditions converging in a specific way. The Klinck field site, where the coldest temperature was measured, is located in the middle of Greenland at an elevation of 3,100 meters (10,170 feet). Extreme cold air temperatures can occur when there is little wind to disturb an area, accompanied by clear skies. In this case, the elevation and a splitting of the Jetstream \u2013 which usually flows over the Greenland ice sheet\u2014 created a dead-zone, allowing the already cold region to continue radiating energy away from the Earth. Similar conditions occur over Canada and result in the famed \u201cpolar vortex\u201d which produces extreme cold that reaches the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more than 40 years, the network of more than 60 AMRC AWS sites has helped provide real-time data for scientists in extreme places like Antarctica and Greenland and has helped build a more complete picture of changes in Earth\u2019s climate.
