This unique forum helps to migrate promising applications from the testing environment to the operational environment with the National Weather Service to improve and deliver more accurate and timely severe weather forecasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2017\/07\/hwt_ewp_forecasters-533x400.jpg\" alt=\"NWS forecasters evaluate new tools for forecasting\" class=\"wp-image-10113\" width=\"604\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2017\/07\/hwt_ewp_forecasters-533x400.jpg 533w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2017\/07\/hwt_ewp_forecasters-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2017\/07\/hwt_ewp_forecasters.jpg 565w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><figcaption>NWS forecasters at the HWT in 2017 evaluating new products and tools, including the improved all-hazards ProbSevere. <br>Credit: Justin Sieglaff, CIMSS.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For nearly a decade, scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies<\/a> have participated in the HWT and this year is no different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a very efficient and effective way to drive development of a product so that it is more operationally useful,\u201d says CIMSS scientist and <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/\">CIMSS Satellite Blog<\/a> contributor Scott Lindstrom. \u201cScientists and developers don&#8217;t often have the opportunity&nbsp;to sit over the shoulder of a forecaster as they use tools and it provides a chance for forecasters to tell researchers what works and what needs to be improved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, feedback on the NOAA-CIMSS <a href=\"https:\/\/realearth.ssec.wisc.edu\/?products=SevereOutl.100,RotationTrackLL60min.-100,G16-ABI-CONUS-BAND13.-75,G16-ABI-CONUS-TC.75,MERGEDREF.50,PROBSEVEREV3.100&amp;center=38.685509760012025,-93.23038327640646&amp;zoom=5&amp;width=1047&amp;height=624&amp;basemap=terrain&amp;labels=lines&amp;view=leaflet&amp;timeproduct=PROBSEVEREV3&amp;timespan=-1h&amp;animationspeed=50\">ProbSevere3<\/a> statistical model \u2013 one of three UW products being tested this year \u2013 gathered during the HWT is helping researchers improve the model\u2019s assessment of developing storms: improvements that can increase the lead time for severe weather warnings. Credit: SSEC\/CIMSS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The other two CIMSS products under review include the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/severe_conv\/pltg.html\">ProbeSevere LightningCast<\/a> model and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/45745\">Polar Hyperspectral Sounding modeling system<\/a>. The LightningCast is a machine learning model that uses visible, near-infrared, and long-wave infrared data from the Advanced Baseline Imager on GOES-16 and GOES-17 weather satellites to predict the probability of lightning in the next 60 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By predicting where lightning is most likely to occur in the future, forecasters are able to provide outdoor event managers , for example, with advanced notice that enables people to take shelter prior to the onset of lightning.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Polar Hyperspectral Sounding modeling system incorporates thermodynamic information from hyperspectral soundings that are measured by instruments on polar orbiting satellites such as Suomi NPP and NOAA-20.
