{"id":2028,"date":"2012-12-27T11:28:52","date_gmt":"2012-12-27T17:28:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/?p=2028"},"modified":"2012-12-27T11:31:19","modified_gmt":"2012-12-27T17:31:19","slug":"uw-madison-aws-observations-contribute-to-finding-significant-warming-in-west-antarctica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/articles\/2028","title":{"rendered":"UW-Madison AWS Observations Contribute to Finding Significant Warming in West Antarctica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Using data collected by the Byrd Automatic Weather Station (AWS), installed and maintained by the UW-Madison in West Antarctica, researchers published a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ngeo\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/ngeo1671.html\">paper<\/a> in <em>Nature Geoscience<\/em> on 23 December 2012 suggesting that warming in West Antarctica may have been underestimated, especially in the summer months.<\/p>\n<p>The research team, led by Dr. David Bromwich of Ohio State University, included scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the UW-Madison Antarctic Meteorological Research Center (<a href=\"http:\/\/amrc.ssec.wisc.edu\/aboutus\/\">AMRC<\/a>). In the paper, they present a \u201ccomplete temperature record for Byrd Station, in which observations have been corrected, and gaps have been filled using global reanalysis data and spatial interpolation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By analyzing observations from the Byrd Automatic Weather Station in Antarctica for the period 1958 \u2013 2010, the record shows a warming in West Antarctica of as much as 2.4 degrees Celsius or 4.3 degrees Fahrenheit, making Central West Antarctica one of the fastest warming locations on the Earth.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2029\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2012\/12\/byrd_aws_360.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2029\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2029\" alt=\"Byrd AWS\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2012\/12\/byrd_aws_360.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2012\/12\/byrd_aws_360.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2012\/12\/byrd_aws_360-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2029\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Byrd Automatic Weather Station<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Byrd AWS is part of a network of over 60 <a href=\"http:\/\/amrc.ssec.wisc.edu\/aws\/index.php?region=West%20Antarctica&amp;station=Byrd&amp;year=2011\">AWS stations<\/a> on the Antarctic continent installed and maintained by the UW-Madison AMRC since 1980. Maintaining occupied sites for collecting meteorological observations in Antarctica is expensive.
