Scientists will be able to use its data soon after it begins to transmit thanks to researchers in SSEC\u2019s<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">NOAA<\/a>scientists stationed at SSEC. SSEC, CIMSS, and NOAA researchers have contributed to satellite development since GOES-3 (geostationary satellites) and TIROS satellites in the 1960s. They simulate the data, develop instrument capabilities, write algorithms, and develop products.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/datacenter\/\">SSEC\u2019s Data Center<\/a>, which has archived geostationary weather satellite data since 1978, assists by helping to make the data available during satellite check out.<\/p>\n<p>As with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/g12_report\/\">GOES-12<\/a>, the last GOES launched, CIMSS and NOAA (at SSEC) researchers will continue as valued members of the post-launch science test team. For the satellite currently scheduled for launch, GOES-N, SSEC\u2019s CIMSS will produce and evaluate products made using data from the new satellite. This includes the generation of temperature and moisture retrievals, cloud top information, derived product imagery, and wind measurements. In preparation for the launch and subsequent data processing, SSEC provided NOAA\u2019s National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) with six radiative transfer coefficient files. NESDIS will use these files for various computations and comparisons.<\/p>\n<p>Although similar to GOES-12,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boeing.com\/defense-space\/space\/bss\/factsheets\/601\/goes_nopq\/goes_nopq.html\" target=\"_blank\">GOES-N, O and P<\/a>\u00a0are different in that they are on a different bus, or platform, that allows navigation, registration and radiometric improvements. The new bus allows detectors to be colder, decreasing instrument noise.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to developing data products, CIMSS and NOAA researchers also help train forecasters and other meteorologists to use the new data. For National Weather Service forecasters, Tim Schmit (NOAA, stationed at SSEC) developed a beta version of a GOES-N\/O\/P VISITview module. The module covers the similarities and differences between the current GOES series and what GOES-N and -O will offer. For example, while the GOES-N\/O\/P images and sounders will offer improved navigation and will also scan during eclipse periods, basic instrumentation is in general unchanged. (See also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/media\/july2005.htmhttps:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/media\/july2005.htm#visitview\">VISITview, below<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>CIMSS researchers who specialize in GOES data products are also working toward the development of greatly improved instruments and data for the GOES series starting with R to be launched in 2012.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a id=\"data_imagery\" name=\"data_imagery\"><\/a><strong>Data and Imagery<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"visitview\"><\/a>VISITview<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong>Several years ago, SSEC\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Tom Whittaker\u00a0<\/strong>helped develop an online tool set for a science-based training program aimed at forecasters,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/visitview\/\">VISITview<\/a>. Now, participants from weather services in the United States as well as Central America and South America can attend regularly scheduled VISITview training sessions sponsored by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmo.ch\/index-en.html\" target=\"_blank\">World Meteorological Organization<\/a>. Dr. Vilma Castro of the organization\u2019s Regional Meteorology Training Center and the Universidad de Costa Rica recently gave glowing praise of the training sessions as well as Whittaker\u2019s involvement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVISIT sessions are proving to be a very powerful training tool. People learn how to use new products in real time situations, appropriate guidance is by all means of utmost importance &#8230; Participant attitude toward the sessions is changing, \u2026 they know this is an opportunity to discuss intriguing weather situations. We should congratulate ourselves for such a fantastic training activity! Thanks &#8230; Tom for your efforts with the server &#8230; Creating the habit to participate periodically and helping newcomers to overcome particular difficulties is very important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seeing what they see<strong>\u2014<\/strong><\/strong>Through extensive software research and collaborative work with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fsl.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Colorado\u2019s Forecast Systems Laboratory<\/a>, CIMSS researchers can now use their Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System workstations to view the exact same satellite imagery that National Weather Service forecasters use to develop their forecasts. This is a significant step in the effort to provide the National Weather Service with improved, higher resolution satellite products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GIFTS foreshadowed<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong>During the spring, an informational item about GIFTS, NASA\u2019s multi-agency\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/oea.larc.nasa.gov\/PAIS\/GIFTS.html\" target=\"_blank\">Geosynchronous Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer<\/a>, appeared on U.S. public television. In the piece,\u00a0<strong>Bill Smith<\/strong>, an atmospheric scientist with SSEC, described the project and its possibilities. Smith formerly was chief scientist for NASA\u2019s Langley Research Center, which produced the video.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Data down under<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Broadcasting Corporation<\/a>\u00a0uses a year\u2019s worth of Antarctic satellite composites in a program on extreme environments. The composites illustrate the weather in this most challenging continent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SSEC\u2019s Data Center<\/strong>\u00a0supplied a special sea surface temperature image to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/ad5ae\" target=\"_blank\">South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission<\/a>\u00a0for a special interactive map of the southern Pacific Ocean. CIMSS\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Scott Bachmeier<\/strong>\u00a0produced the loop for Japan\u2019s Dreamvision.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a name=\"tropical_cyclones\"><\/a><strong>Tropical Cyclones<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Support for a NASA mission<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong>As one of ten universities participating in a larger NASA field experiment to investigate certain aspects of tropical cyclones, UW-Madison\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">Cooperative Institute of Meteorological Satellite Studies<\/a>\u00a0(CIMSS) fosters\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic\/tcsp\/\">a team of researchers<\/a>\u00a0tasked with providing science support. Led by CIMSS\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Chris Velden<\/strong>, the team also plans to use data from the experiment to study the characteristics of a specific level of the atmosphere crucial to tropical cyclone formation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tcsp.nsstc.nasa.gov\/tcsp\/\" target=\"_blank\">NASA\u2019s Tropical Cloud Systems and Processes mission<\/a>\u00a0will run from July 1-28, 2005 and hopes to make observations that will help answer questions about the origins and lifecycles of tropical weather systems. During this time, Velden\u2019s research team will provide NASA with wind and wave information derived using data from weather satellites.<\/p>\n<p>Using data sets from the NASA field experiment, Velden will partner with colleague John Mecikalski of the University of Alabama to diagnose the behavior of flow fields in the upper troposphere as tropical cyclones develop. The study will rely primarily on data from specialized satellite instruments as well as measurements from NASA and NOAA aircraft. Last November, the UW Lidar Group brought the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lidar.ssec.wisc.edu\/syst\/ahsrl\/barrow.htm\">AHSRL back from near Barrow, Alaska<\/a>\u00a0where it participated in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nsa.met.psu.edu\/sst_web\/science_doc.php\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Energy\u2019s Mixed-Phase Arctic Cloud Experiment (M-PACE)<\/a>, a month-long study of Arctic clouds. Data retrieved by the AHSRL during that study will be used in climate models. It worked well in Alaska to the relief of the researchers who designed and fabricated the lidar instrument to be the first fully automated UW lidar. The lidar group wanted it to operate flawlessly for its next challenge, taking measurements for NOAA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/psc.apl.washington.edu\/search\/\" target=\"_blank\">SEARCH program<\/a>. This program plans to study Arctic climate change in detail, from Eureka Base, a Canadian research outpost on Ellesmere Island. This point is the farthest north from which to track geostationary satellites. In this case, communications satellites that will be the conduit for software, diagnostics and data to and from UW\u2013Madison\u2019s SSEC. Read about all the innovative changes made to this complex instrument in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ssec.wisc.edu\/media\/lidar-AHSRL-2005.htm\">an SSEC feature article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISC progress<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/84wyv\" target=\"_blank\">VECO Polar Resources\u2019 newsletter<\/a>\u00a0from June 27 included an article about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/icds\/\">Ice Coring and Drill Services<\/a>\u2019 (ICDS) new drill and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/icds\/projects\/waiscores.html\">related scientific endeavor<\/a>. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/icds\/equipment\/development.html\">Deep Ice Sheet Coring Drill<\/a>\u00a0will burrow over two miles into Antarctica\u2019s icy terrain to obtain ice core that will provide insight into atmospheric history. Looking at the history of climate change will help scientists develop better predictions as to how the climate will change due to continued human impact. Reporter Kara Nyberg included details about the drill and praise from Ken Taylor, the principal investigator for the project: \u201cThis is the first time we can conduct experiments to improve the drilling process without having to worry about damaging the ice &#8230;\u201d Images of the drill tower and its traveling machine shop accompanied the article. The article also linked to ICDS\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/icds\/projects\/waiscores.html\">Web page for the project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ASTRO-E flies SSEC technology<\/strong>\u2014In early July, a ground breaking X-ray detector that uses\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~davej\/adr.html\">SSEC-developed cooling technology<\/a>\u00a0will launch aboard the new Japanese observatory, Astro-E. The data will also provide insight into the chemicals required to sustain life. The X-ray detector created by NASA is the primary instrument on the satellite.<\/p>\n<p>SSEC engineers\u00a0<strong>Tony Wendricks<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Dave Jones<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/media\/adr\/adr.html\">devised the cooling technology inside NASA\u2019s instrument several years ago<\/a>. They joined forces with Dan McCammon of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.physics.wisc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">UW\u2013Madison\u2019s Physics Department<\/a>\u00a0to create a small unit to refrigerate one of the X-ray detectors involved in the initial collaboration between the Japanese space agency and NASA for this astronomy project. Using a magnetic field and salt crystals, the unit cools the detector to temperatures cooler than space. Wendricks and Jones used a perforated disk to string 1600 gold wires without letting them touch each other. They also developed a way to grow the necessary salt crystals inside the instrument.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life after a proposal is refused<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong>In\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/homepages.cae.wisc.edu\/~wiscengr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wisconsin\u00a0<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/homepages.cae.wisc.edu\/~wiscengr\/\"><em>Engineer<\/em>\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0June edition, reporter LaShunda Prescott-Manly detailed \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/homepages.cae.wisc.edu\/~wiscengr\/feb05\/baryon.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">The life cycle of a NASA research proposal<\/a>.\u201d She looked at SSEC\u2019s proposal for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/baryons\/\">Missing Baryon Explorer<\/a>. NASA ultimately did not accept the project, but a lot of work went into the proposal.\u00a0<strong>Wilt Sanders\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>(SSEC) work as the principal investigator for the project received notice along with his continued enthusiasm for it even though NASA did not accept the proposal. Prescott-Manly also mentions\u00a0<strong>Rosalyn Pertzborn\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Sanjay Limaye\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>plans for education and outreach elements, and quotes\u00a0<strong>Terri Gregory<\/strong>\u00a0about the center\u2019s administrative policies. An image of the proposed model, an image of an instrument slated for the small explorer, and a picture of an earlier piece of space equipment in SSEC\u2019s clean room accompany the article.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a name=\"meetings_and_experiments\"><\/a><strong>Meetings and Experiments<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Workshop shares high spectral analysis\u2014<\/strong>In early June, the fifth workshop on high spectral science was held at the UW-Madison. The workshop focused on proposed missions for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/muri\/\">Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative<\/a>\u00a0on airborne, low-earth orbiting, and geostationary platforms. More than half of the attendees were from UW-Madison\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">Space Science and Engineering Center<\/a>\u00a0(SSEC) and\/or the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies<\/a>\u00a0(CIMSS), including a few federal employees stationed at SSEC. Most of the others attended from aerospace engineering corporations, with a few from other universities and the federal government. Most attendees are collaborating with SSEC and CIMSS on data product and instrumentation development.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop served as a venue for sharing research with others working with high-spectral resolution data from weather satellite instruments. CIMSS product developers and their collaborators gave in-depth talks on different research topics that involve high-spectral data, including models that incorporate cloud properties, sounding retrievals, cloud properties measured with ground and air based instruments, capabilities and new developments of radiative transfer models, convection analyzed with various sensors, cloud retrievals, and multilevel wind measurements. Also, CIMSS researchers continue to collaborate with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncar.ucar.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Center for Atmospheric Research<\/a>to develop useful products for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.faa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Aviation Agency<\/a>, including those that will detect turbulence and fine volcanic ash. Excellent overviews are found in muri_24 through muri_29, from historical and product description perspectives.\u00a0<strong>Maria Vasys<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Wayne Feltz<\/strong>organized the workshop for CIMSS under the leadership of\u00a0<strong>Allen Huang<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Representing CliC<\/strong>\u2014From June 1-2,\u00a0<strong>Jeff Key<\/strong>\u00a0(NOAA with SSEC) attended the first\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmo.ch\/web\/wcrp\/wcrp-home.html\" target=\"_blank\">World Climate Research Programme<\/a>\u00a0Observations and Assimilation Panel held in New York City. Key represented the programme\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/clic.npolar.no\/\" target=\"_blank\">Climate and Cryosphere (CliC)<\/a>\u00a0project. Representatives from all of the major projects under the programme attended. NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.giss.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Goddard Institute for Space Studies<\/a>\u00a0(GISS) hosted the panel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CIMSS Board of Directors<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong>The CIMSS Board of Directors held their annual meeting on June 22. NESDIS\u2019s Eric Bayler, NASA\u2019s Jack Kaye, and UW\u2019s Dean of the Graduate School Martin Cadwaller gave presentations. CIMSS Director\u00a0<strong>Steve Ackerman<\/strong>\u00a0gave the \u201cState of CIMSS\u201d address to both the board and the general public. His talk highlighted science activities of the past year and gave insight into future work, while also providing a framework within which the research fits.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a name=\"presentations_publications\"><\/a>Presentations and Publications<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Space meeting in India<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong><strong>Rosalyn Pertzborn<\/strong>, director of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tellus.ssec.wisc.edu\/outreach\/\">SSEC\u2019s Office of Space Science Education\u00a0<\/a>, and SSEC senior scientist\u00a0<strong>Sanjay Limaye<\/strong>spoke at the Astronautical Society of India\u2019s Regional Conference 2005 in Bangalore. The conference combined both planetary exploration and space law and focused on \u201cBringing Space Benefits to the Asian Region.\u201d. During the afternoon session on \u201cSpace Science and Education,\u201d Pertzborn spoke on training the next generation of scientists.\u00a0<em>News<\/em>\u00a0of the IAA-IISL Regional Conference 2005 noted that she described \u201cthe scope and breadth of programs affiliated with NASA\u2019s solar system missions.\u201d In the afternoon session devoted to planetary sciences, Limaye presented \u201cNew Frontiers in Solar System Exploration: The Community Input to the NASA Decadal Survey (2003-2013)\u201d and described the political and practical process by which NASA selects solar system missions. The process includes scientists\u2019 input and National Academy of Science recommendations. Budgetary and other resources and community interest \u201cdetermine how much of the community vision is realized \u2026 .\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>BAMS inclusion<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong>A summary of\u00a0<strong>Howard Berger\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0(CIMSS) AMS satellite conference paper, \u201cSuperobbing for Atmospheric Motion Vectors,\u201d appeared in the conference summaries of the January 2005\u00a0<em>Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.<\/em>\u00a0The paper was presented at the satellite conference at the American Meterology Society annual conference. Conference summaries only include a subset of the hundreds of papers presented at the annual AMS meeting.<\/p>\n<p>A paper by\u00a0<strong>Andrew Heidinger<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Michael Pavolonis<\/strong>\u00a0titled, \u201cGlobal Daytime Distribution of Overlapping Cirrus Cloud from NOAA\u2019s Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer\u201d has been accepted for publication in the<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ametsoc.org\/pubs\/journals\/jcli\/\" target=\"_blank\">Journal of Climate<\/a><\/em>. This work applies a recently developed algorithm to derive one of the first global depictions of the occurrence of multi-layer clouds from a satellite. The technique has been expanded for application to data from polar orbiting and geostationary satellites currently being prepared for launch. A more complete climatology that includes the occurrence of multi-layer cloud is being developed under the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/clavr\/patmos-x.html\">AVHRR Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x)<\/a>\u00a0project.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a name=\"edu_outreach\"><\/a><strong>Education and Outreach<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Outreach in India<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong>SSEC\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Sanjay Limaye<\/strong>\u00a0continues to receive attention in his position as the center\u2019s ambassador to India.
