On\u00a0nature<\/em>\u2019s cover<\/strong>\u00a0: The\u00a0cover<\/a>\u00a0of the April 21 edition of\u00a0nature<\/em>features\u00a0Rick Kohrs\u2019s<\/strong>montage of Hurricanes Charlie, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne.\u00a0The article<\/a>associated with the image discusses potential forecasting methods that are based on an analysis of wind anomalies from 1950-2003. The magazine credits the image to SSEC. The online version of the magazine also prominently displays the image. Kohrs used satellite imagery to produce the montage.<\/p>\n

Hurricane hazards<\/strong>\u00a0: Lee County, Florida recently produced the 2005 edition of their\u00a0All Hazards Guide<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0The cover features\u00a0Rick Kohrs\u2019s<\/strong>montage of the major hurricanes that hit during the 2004 season.This is the same montage featured on the cover of nature magazine.<\/p>\n

Cloud data useful for volcanic ash monitoring<\/strong>\u00a0: Earlier this month,\u00a0Mike Pavolonis\u00a0<\/strong>(CIMSS)<\/acronym>\u00a0and\u00a0Andrew Heidinger<\/strong>\u00a0(NESDIS<\/acronym>\u00a0with SSEC) met with\u00a0NESDIS\u00a0<\/acronym>scientists to discuss the possibility of using data from aCIMSS<\/acronym>\u00a0cloud product to identify volcanic ash and determine heights of ash plumes. The algorithms from the\u00a0CLAVR-x<\/acronym>\u00a0Extended Clouds data that Pavolonis and Heidinger presented for these purposes appear effective for many events resulting from volcanic eruptions.<\/p>\n

Answering icy questions<\/strong>\u00a0: An online news commentary,\u00a0Slate<\/a><\/em>, offers answers to common questions about the daily news in its\u00a0explainer<\/a><\/em>\u00a0section<\/a>. On April 20, writer Daniel Engber explored the question of what constitutes an iceberg versus a \u201cbergy bit\u201d and who counts them. Engber consultedMatthew Lazzara\u00a0<\/strong>of SSEC\u2019sAntarctic Meteorological Research Center<\/a>\u00a0(AMRC) for this piece. The article also links to\u00a0AMRC\u2019s iceberg FAQ<\/a>\u00a0as well as one of their\u00a0iceberg images<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Presentations and Publications<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

International applications<\/strong>\u00a0: From April 13-15,\u00a0Tim Schmit\u00a0<\/strong>(NOAA with SSEC) participated in a European conference to prepare for the next generation of meteorological satellites. Schmit, who helps guide the GOES-R development process, presented information on GOES-R and gave recommendations based on comments from GOES-R users\u2019 conferences.<\/p>\n

AIRS analysis<\/strong>\u00a0: The January-February edition of NASA\u2019s\u00a0The Earth Observer<\/em>\u00a0included a synopsis of the meeting and mentioned Hank Revercomb and Bob Knuteson\u2019s contributions. Revercomb and Knuteson attended the AIRS Science Team Meeting November 30 \u2013 December 2 and presented during the third session: Development of Advanced Product Generation Algorithms and Research Products. Knuteson studied the infrared surface emissivity over Egypt and presented his findings at the meeting. Revercomb showed results and preliminary data analysis from S-HIS flights to validate EOS Aqua and EOS Aura in October 2004. The synopsis mistakenly listed Knuteson as affiliated with the University of Washington.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span>Weather Research<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

CIMSS\u2019s silver anniversary\u00a0<\/strong>: This July brings the\u00a025th anniversary of the SSEC\u2019s Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies<\/a>\u00a0(CIMSS). The institute was founded in 1980 as an agreement between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the University of Wisconsin-Madison with. NASA later joining the agreement. In conjunction with anniversary festivities, a symposium on \u201cSatellite Meteorology: Past, Present and Future\u201d will be held on the UW-Madison campus from 11-13 July 2005. The symposium will acknowledge many of the exciting advancements in satellite meteorology over the past quarter century that the institute was involved in, including their impact on weather and climate studies. CIMSS has been and continues to be a leader in the development of techniques and applications of environmental satellite data.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Honors and Awards<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Anniversary buzz<\/strong>\u00a0: As the CIMSS 25th anniversary nears, members of the scientific community continue to come forward and show their appreciation. Recently, Steve Lyons, a hurricane expert at the Weather Channel, gave glowing praise for CIMSS\u2019s satellite work. He uses their satellite data in his forecasts and \u201cbeat[s] all the [numerical prediction] models on a routine basis.\u201d Lyons extended his congratulations on 25 years of research and hard work. He added, \u201cThose of us able to use satellite information effectively know the true value of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Telecommuting for\u00a0MARS<\/acronym>:SSEC\u2019s public information coordinator\u00a0Terri Gregory<\/strong>continues her adventures working for MARS in Benevento, Italy. Recently, she helped with a large technology trade show in Naples the weekend after Easter. For the Province of Benevento, MARS exhibited with a social services agency called MultiLabor.
