Recently, several researchers from SSEC traveled to Memphis as a part of this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/media\/features\/mar04_05.htm\">program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<table width=\"300\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"5\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2013\/06\/march2005tamdar_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3579\" alt=\"march2005tamdar_1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2013\/06\/march2005tamdar_1.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"right\"><em>SSEC&#8217;s AERIbago acts as a mobile weather laboratory and helps to validate new weather instruments.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>With a modified Winnebago, nicknamed the AERIbago, SSEC will help test the accuracy of measurements taken from recently designed weather instruments built to fly aboard commuter aircraft. The data gathered from the new instrument will go to weather forecasters, pilots and the airports to develop better forecasts of severe weather, potential icing and visibility.<\/p>\n<p>From February 23 through March 11, researchers with SSEC\u2019s Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) used the AERIbago to test the quality of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tamdar\/quicklooks\/radiosondes_tamdar\/\">measurements<\/a>\u00a0taken from the Tropospheric Airborne Meteorological Data Reporting (TAMDAR) instrument. The AERIbago is parked behind him.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Data gathered by CIMSS through this experiment made it into the National Weather Service\u2019s discussion group, including a link to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/aeri\/realtime\/memphis\/memphis_sum_current.shtml\">CIMSS\u2019s Memphis data page<\/a>. \u201cIt&#8217;s great to know that people are using this data!\u201d said researcher\u00a0<strong>Sarah Bedka<\/strong>\u00a0(CIMSS) in a TAVE daily report.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.srh.noaa.gov\/zme\/TAMDAR.htm\" target=\"_blank\">The Memphis branch of the National Weather Service<\/a>\u00a0also featured a description of the TAMDAR Great Lakes Fleet Experiment on their Web site. It includes information about the experiment and why Memphis was an important research stop. A picture of\u00a0<strong>John Short<\/strong>(SSEC) holding a weather balloon accompanies the article.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tamdar\/pictures\/\">view more pictures from Memphis\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"antartica\" name=\"antartica\"><\/a><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Antarctica<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Extreme temperatures\u00a0:\u00a0Matthew Lazzara\u00a0of SSEC\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amrc.ssec.wisc.edu\/iceberg.html\">Antarctic Meteorological Research Center<\/a>\u00a0is featured in an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.meteogiornale.it\/news\/read.php?id=10500\" target=\"_blank\">article on Antarctica\u2019s weather in\u00a0<em>Meteogiornale<\/em><\/a>, an Italian Web-based science news magazine. Using data from SSEC\u2019s Automatic Weather Station (AWS) program, writer and cold-weather specialist Stefano Di Battista lists temperatures that have fallen below \u201380 C. Lazzara is pictured in the field with an AWS.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a id=\"data_imagery\" name=\"data_imagery\"><\/a><strong>Data and Imagery<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Investigating a plane crash<\/strong>: SSEC provided satellite data sets to the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msc.ec.gc.ca\/ACSD\/mrb\/index_e.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cloud Physics Research division of the Meteorological Service of Canada<\/a>for use in their investigations of a 2002 plane crash. Using data from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/\">GOES<\/a>and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/clavr\/patmos-x.html\">AVHRR Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended<\/a>\u00a0product, they hope to determine the cause of the November 2002 crash in Flagstaff, AZ. Sromovsky is quoted explaining how the telescope can \u201creveal many more cloud features than the\u00a0<em>Voyager<\/em>\u00a0spacecraft found after traveling all the way to Uranus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adding aerosol data<\/strong>: The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/clavr\/patmos-x.html\">AVHRR Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x) project<\/a>\u00a0seeks to reprocess AVHRR data using many algorithms developed through\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">NESDIS<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>Andrew Heidinger<\/strong>\u00a0(CIMSS) recently received a set of aerosol optical data tables that he then incorporated into the project\u2019s data stream. The meteorologists requested access to specific GOES-10 data sets gathered over the Hawaiian island of Kauai. This data will support a military project scheduled for March 2005.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ivan on DVD<\/strong>: The Coastal Weather Research Center recently produced a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hurricaneivandvd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">DVD chronicling Hurricane Ivan<\/a>, which hit the United States\u2019 Gulf Coast during the 2004 hurricane season. The DVD,\u00a0<em>Hurricane Ivan: A Portrait From Earth and Space<\/em>, uses\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/mcidas\/\">McIDAS<\/a>\u00a0imagery to re-create this destructive storm.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"presentations_publications\" name=\"presentations_publications\"><\/a><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Presentations and Publications<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A report for the future<\/strong>: SSEC played a significant role in many aspects of the National Research Council\u2019s 2004 publication titled \u201cUtilization of Operational Environmental Satellite Data: Ensuring Readiness for 2010 and Beyond.\u201d SSEC\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Allen Huang<\/strong>\u00a0acted as the chair of the Committee on Environmental Satellite Data Utilization for this report with\u00a0<strong>Rosalyn Pertzborn<\/strong>\u00a0(SSEC) as the assistant to the chair.\u00a0<strong>Paul Menzel<\/strong>(NOAA\/NESDIS at SSEC) received acknowledgment in the forward for providing briefings and background information. The report also uses SSEC imagery and data. The clouds in the cover image were created using SSEC data and an image of winds for Hurricane Bonnie created by\u00a0<strong>Bormin Huang<\/strong>(CIMSS) appears in the first chapter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mixed-phase paper published<\/strong>:\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ametsoc.org\/pubs\/journals\/jas\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences<\/a><\/em>\u00a0published a paper about mixed-phase clouds co-authored by\u00a0<strong>Jeff Key<\/strong>\u00a0(NOAA at SSEC) in collaboration with various scientists from around the country. The paper provided insight into some observations made during the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sheba.apl.washington.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic (SHEBA)<\/a>\u00a0experiment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sharing knowledge<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>The Earth Observer<\/em>\u00a0for November\/December 2004 published the minutes of the Aqua Science Working Group Meeting held October 26-27, 2004. At the meeting,\u00a0<strong>Allen Huang<\/strong>\u00a0(CIMSS) presented some of CIMSS\u2019s cloud research conducted using satellite data. He spoke in<strong>Jun Li<\/strong>\u2019s (CIMSS) stead, as Li was unable to attend. Huang discussed many of CIMSS\u2019s efforts to combine MODIS imaging and AIRS sounding data. He specifically addressed examples of cloud-clearing and cloud-top property activities. Li\u2019s other presentation, submitted electronically, highlighted updates of certain satellite data products such as the MODIS water vapor product.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"meetings\"><\/a><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Meetings<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking ahead<\/strong>: In collaboration with the NESDIS Advanced Satellite Products Branch, CIMSS plans to host the second NOAA\/NESDIS Cooperative Research Program Science Symposium here at UW-Madison. This year&#8217;s symposium will be held July 13-14, following the CIMSS silver anniversary celebration. The topic will be satellite calibration and product validation.The first symposium, held last June, featured discussions on measuring and modeling aerosols.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"edu_out\"><\/a><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Education and Outreach<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scientific storytelling<\/strong>: While talking with Patty Loew of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lsc.wisc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">UW\u2019s Life Science Communications\u2019 Department<\/a>\u00a0two years ago,\u00a0<strong>Sanjay Limaye<\/strong>learned of the similarities between Native American folk stories and current scientific theory. Together, they decided to find a culturally relevant way to teach Native American students about space science. Loew and Limaye\u2019s concept can now come to fruition by way of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.provost.wisc.edu\/baldwin\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment<\/a>, a grant given to seven projects around the state that advance the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.wisc.edu\/etext\/WIReader\/Contents\/Idea.html\" target=\"_blank\">Wisconsin Idea<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.wisc.edu\/10757.html\">Their project<\/a>\u00a0will encourage students at Native American schools throughout the upper Midwest to explore the connections between space science and folk tradition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Out at sea<\/strong>: CIMSS researcher\u00a0<strong>Kevin Baggett<\/strong>\u00a0participated in an outreach collaboration between the Royal Caribbean International ship Explorer of the Seas and the University of Miami\u2019s Rosensteil School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. From February 6 to February 13, Kevin gave tours of the atmospheric lab and presented lectures to the general public. His main talk was entitled, \u201cSatellite Observations of the Ocean and Atmosphere,\u201d and included highlights of the MODIS, AIRS, and GOES instruments. It also touted future instruments such as GIFTS and those on GOES-R. Explorer of the Seas carries an SSEC instrument, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsmas.miami.edu\/rccl\/maeri.html\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer<\/a>, to make precise measurements of the interface of air and sea. For more information on this University of Miami program, visit their Web site at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsmas.miami.edu\/rccl\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.rsmas.miami.edu\/rccl\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Explaining science to the public: Shaima Nasiri<\/strong>\u00a0will educate the public about weather balloons at this year\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/science.wisc.edu\/sciex2005\/\" target=\"_blank\">Science Expeditions<\/a>, an outreach event coordinated by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/science.wisc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Science Alliance<\/a>\u00a0at UW-Madison. At her exploration station in the Engineering Centers Building, Nasiri will explain how a weather balloon operates and why the data gathered aboard the balloons is important to weather forecasters. If the weather allows it, Nasiri will launch a balloon as a demonstration. In addition to Nasiri\u2019s booth, two other research centers based in the AO&amp;SS building will have exhibits at the event. The Environmental Remote Sensing Center plans to have a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsinview.org\/\">WisconsinView<\/a>\u00a0booth and the Center for Climate Research will educate the public about snowflakes.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/icecube.wisc.edu\/\">IceCube<\/a>\u00a0also has plans for a booth.
