{"id":7290,"date":"2015-03-16T14:05:10","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T19:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/?p=7290"},"modified":"2015-03-16T16:50:27","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T21:50:27","slug":"aoss-will-open-doors-saturday-for-science-expeditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/articles\/7290","title":{"rendered":"AOSS will open doors Saturday for Science Expeditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences building opens its doors this Saturday\u00a0as part of UW-Madison&#8217;s Science Expeditions, a weekend-long event that welcomes learners and explorers of all ages to campus to experience science first-hand.<\/p>\n<p>The AOSS Open House\u00a0will take place on Saturday, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The activities planned are sure to appeal to children and adults alike, showcasing the broad range of weather-related scientific research happening in our building.<\/p>\n<p>The Antarctic Meteorological Research Center will demonstrate\u00a0interactive weather instruments, as well as cold-weather gear worn at the South Pole. Nearby, a\u00a0colorful, rotating water tank from Professor Galen McKinley&#8217;s Ocean Research Group\u00a0will show\u00a0onlookers important weather processes in action, visualizing\u00a0how water and air movement plays a role in climate research.<\/p>\n<p>Our 3D globe demonstrations will allow\u00a0visitors to see some of the the high-quality animated satellite imagery produced here at SSEC, as well as tours of our roof (the second-tallest in Madison) and its impressive arrangement\u00a0of\u00a0satellite dishes.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0variety of weather and climate applets and satellite-imagery computer modules will also be up and running for visitors to explore.<\/p>\n<p>More details on this free, public event are available on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/outreach\/science-expeditions\/\" target=\"_blank\">our website<\/a>.
