{"id":847,"date":"2012-07-27T10:08:27","date_gmt":"2012-07-27T15:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/?p=847"},"modified":"2012-08-01T10:45:11","modified_gmt":"2012-08-01T15:45:11","slug":"through-the-atmosphere-published","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/news\/articles\/847","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Through the Atmosphere&#8221; Published"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Summer 2012 issue of SSEC&#8217;s twice-yearly publication, &#8220;Through the Atmosphere,&#8221; is available online here, or in hard copy from SSEC (see below for details).<\/p>\n<p>This issue focuses on NASA&#8217;s newest climate studying satellite (and the first named for an individual), the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership, or Suomi NPP. Verner Suomi, known as the father of meteorological satellite studies, was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who envisioned and created, along with Professor Robert Parent, the first instrument to study Earth&#8217;s climate from orbit. Explorer 7, launched in 1959, carried that instrument, and the new Suomi NPP satellite carries on the work begun so long ago.<\/p>\n<p>This issue of &#8220;Through the Atmosphere&#8221; celebrates the history, the ongoing work, and the future of satellite meteorology. Take a closer look at the cutting edge of climate studies.
