Neptune Atmospheric Research

Scientists at SSEC are involved in studying Neptune's atmosphere. Using data from the Voyager spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based observations, we are learning about Neptune's seasons, atmospheric circulations, and cloud structure.

The Hubble Space Telescope data is used to track Neptune's brightness and cloud motions. Animations of the data indicate increasing brightness and widening in the southern hemisphere cloud bands and indicate seasonal change. Hubble and Voyager data are being used to study Neptune's dark spots, as well as to estimate cloud motion (wind) speeds.
