{"id":492,"date":"2026-04-03T15:12:40","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T15:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/staff\/john-cintineo\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T19:41:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T19:41:54","slug":"john-cintineo","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/staff\/john-cintineo\/","title":{"rendered":"John Cintineo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I\u2019m a research meteorologist at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssl.noaa.gov\/\">NSSL<\/a>), stationed at the University of Wisconsin \u2014 Madison (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisc.edu\/\">UW-Madison<\/a>), which houses the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">CIMSS<\/a>) within the Space Science and Engineering Center (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">SSEC<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of my work involves applied research with remotely sensed data (e.g., radar, satellite, lightning) in an operational context. I heavily leverage machine learning (ML), statistical methods, object-tracking, data visualization, and forecast verification in my projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main project I work on are <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/probsevere\">ProbSevere<\/a>, a collection of ML nowcasting models for convective hazards, and <a href=\"https:\/\/phi.nssl.noaa.gov\/\">Probabilistic Hazards Information (PHI)<\/a>, which utilizes ProbSevere.
