NOAAPORT Data System

Updated 8 February 2000

SSEC's NOAAPORT data system is based on the SSEC Desktop Ingestor (SDI). The NOAAPORT system provides collection of NOAA's real-time environmental data and products transmitted by the four NOAAPORT data channels. These channels include the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and National Weather Service Telecommunications Gateway (NWSTG) data and products, GOES-EAST imagery, GOES-WEST imagery, and Non-GOES Imagery/DCP data.

Data Types and Formats

The NOAAPORT NCEP/NWSTG signal contains the following types of data:

  • Free text data (ASCII) includes products such as NWSTG text and observational data.

  • Binary Universal Form for Data Representation (BUFR) data includes products such as NWSTG upper-air collective, and profiler data.

  • Gridded Binary (GRIB) data includes NCEP products such as the nested grid model (NGM), NMC aviation model (AVN), medium-range forecast model (MRF), Early Eta (80 km), MesoEta (40 and 20 km), and RUC (80 km) data.

  • Graphics (Redbook) data includes products such as manually generated non-model data.

  • Vendor proprietary products also are broadcast as part of the NCEP/NWSTG data stream.

The GOES-EAST Data Channel provides data from the GOES East satellite. It is data stream consisting of the following imagery products: visible, infrared, and water vapor for the Eastern Conterminous United States (CONUS), Puerto Rico, supernational composites, and Northern Hemisphere (NH) composites.

The GOES-WEST Data Channel provides data from the GOES West satellite. It is a data stream consisting of the following imagery products: visible, infrared, water vapor for CONUS, Alaska, and Hawaii; supernational composites, and NH composites.

The Non-GOES Imagery/DCP Data Channel data stream currently includes GOES DCP data, GMS/GOES-West/GOES-East/METEOSAT composites for visible, IR, and water vapor products (every 3 hours), and reserve capacity for selected other satellite imagery to be acquired by NESDIS for future field applications.
