Updated February 11, 2019

GOES-17 becomes operational as the GOES-West satellite on February 12, 2019 at 1800 UTC.

GOES-West
SDS ADDE datasets WESTA, WESTAL, WESTB, WESTBL are now available to users.
Direct real-time access to L1B and glm data are available via mounted drives contact SDS for details.
GOES-West will be located at 137.2º West.

GOES-15
SDS will continue to make GOES-15 data available via the ADDE datasets WESTS and WESTL.
GOES-15 will be located at 128º West.

GOES-17 and GOES-15 will operate in tandem from their respective locations of 137.2 degrees west and 128 degrees west through early July 2019.

User Action is Required
User scripts should be updated using the new ADDE datasets or direct access locations.
McIDAS version 2018.1 or later should be installed.
ABI instruments exhibit many differences in channels, coverages, data volume, and resolution in comparison to current GOES-West (GOES-15). See details at the bottom of this page.

Differences between GOES-17 ABI and GOES-15 Imager

  • GOES ABI transmits 16 channels compared to current GOES’s 5.  ABI channel and resolution do not match those of current GOES
  • When requesting images by time,  the seconds must be included E.g. TIME=12:15:37
  • Scanning differences – GOES-17 is expected to primarily transmit data in MODE 6.
    • MODE 3 sends:
      • FD (Full disk) images every 15 minutes at approximately XX:00:37, XX:15:37, XX:30:37, and XX:45:37
      • M1 or M2 (Meso scale sector 1 or 2) every minute offset by 30 second
        • M1 is at XX:XX:24
        • M2 are then at XX:XX:54
        • If M1 and M2 are scanning the same mesoscale sector, there will only be an M1 coverage, but at XX:XX:24 and XX:XX:54

XX:02:16
XX:07:16
XX:12:16
XX:17:16
XX:22:16
XX:27:16
XX:32:16
XX:37:16
XX:42:16
XX:47:16
XX:52:16
XX:57:16

    • MODE 4 sends:
      • FD (Full disk) images every 5 minutes.
      • CONUS (Continental US coverage) These ARE subsetted from FD.
      • No meso sectors.
    • MODE 6 sends:
      • FD (Full disk) images every 10 minutes.
      • CONUS (Continental US coverage) Images are every 5 minutes.
      • M1 or M2 Every minute, offset by 30 second intervals.
  • There are 6 ABI ADDE datasets
    • ALL  – All coverages
    • FD – Full Disk coverage
    • CONUS – Continental US coverage (these images are not a subset of the FD in MODE3, but they are a subset of FD in MODE4)
    • M1 – Mesoscale sector 1
    • M2 – Mesoscale sector 2
    • M – Both  Mesoscale sector 1 and Mesoscale sector 2
  • There are 3 GLM ADDE datasets
    • GLM-EVENT  – GLM Event Data
    • GLM-FLASH – GLM Flash Data
    • GLM-GROUP – GLM Group Data
  • There is no sounder on GOES-17 (GOES-R series) satellites
  • ADDE servers cannot “follow/track” images at this time
  • Data may come from 1 of 2 sources PDA via STAR or Direct Broadcast.  In most cases data will be from Direct Broadcast. The switch between users should be transparent, although data from the PDA via STAR may be delayed by 20 minutes or more. SDS provides a monitor to view the status of incoming data from source.
  • There is a RabbitMQ event service available to alert users of new data availability for every image.   If you are interested in information on or subscribing to this service, please contact SDS sds@ssec.wisc.edu .

If you have any questions regarding access to this data please email us at sds@ssec.wisc.edu.

If you have questions regarding McIDAS use of the data please contact the McIDAS Users Group, mug@ssec.wisc.edu.
