CIMSS Science Symposium Debuts

On 12 December 2012, CIMSS Director Steve Ackerman welcomed participants and audience to the first CIMMS Science Symposium. Held in the Marquee Theater of Union South, the Symposium was the first of what is hoped to be a biannual event where CIMSS researchers can present brief descriptions of their latest and ongoing work.

In its early days, CIMSS was much smaller – the entire organization was located on the 2nd Floor of the Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences (AOSS) Building.

“It was easy for folks to run into each other,” Ackerman said in his opening remarks. “We could see what each other was doing, and collaborate. Then we expanded up to the 4th Floor and things became more challenging. Now we’re spread out to 2, 4, 6 and 10. Connections have to be made purposefully.”

An annual Poster Session for researchers in the AOSS Building is now a regular event, with its third year coming up soon. Periodic bagel and coffee breakfasts in the Library help with cross-communication.

“The more interaction we can achieve, the better,” Ackerman said. “This Symposium is dedicated to talking about new things that are happening in our building.”

Eight presentations were chosen for this first CIMSS Symposium. Video recordings of each presentation are available on YouTube.
