Status of Satellite Winds Use in the Météo-France NWP System

Christophe Payan, CNRM, Université de Toulouse, Météo-France and CNRS

The talk will be an update regarding the use of satellite winds in the operational numerical weather system of Météo-France.

For 2 years, we have followed the changes of geostationary satellites, Meteosat-9 has replaced Meteosat-8 in IODC position, Himawari-8 by Himawari-9, GOES-17 by GOES-18 (GOES-W) and soon Meteosat-10 will be back in place of Meteosat-11 on Met0. In the same time, the assimilation of scatterometer winds from HY-2B and HY-2C was activated in complementary of ASCAT from MetOp-1(B) and MetOp-3(C) after the stops of ScatSat-1 and MetOp-A. Also Aeolus mission continues to provide valuable data.

We will show the impacts of these different datasets according different metrics as classic forecast scores in the framework of OSE experiments or through DFS or FSOi diagnostics.
