This earthquake was the largest in Southern California since the 7.1 Hector Mine earthquake which struck the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps base in October 1999.

Initial reports indicated some damage and fires in the city of Ridgecrest, CA. In addition, there are initial reports of some power outages in Ridgecrest, though the Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas and Electric estimate power restoration by Friday morning.

The Satellite-based Disaster Outreach Coordinator (SDOC) JPSS Risk Reduction product is run at Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies
